On Friday, October 30, 2009, Nathan had just turned 10 years old. The next day, he prepared to go out trick-or-treating, but by the time evening came around, he was feeling sick—so sick that he decided to stay home. On Sunday, November 1, Nathan was admitted to the hospital because he was having trouble breathing. He spent several months in the pediatric intensive care unit with a life-threatening influenza complication. No one in his family had ever received an annual influenza vaccine. For 7 days he was sedated and intubated, with two collapsed lungs, unable to breathe on his own.
