Hapag-Lloyd Cruises’ Europa 2 is now using cold ironing at the Cruise Center Altona in Hamburg, Germany. The process provides shoreside electrical power to the ship at berth while her main and auxiliary engines are turned off. Malta’s Valletta Cruise Port handled a record 902,425 passenger movements during 372 cruise ship calls in 2019. Homeporting calls also rose, accounting for 31% of the total number of ship visits, compared to 22% in 2018. This helped Valletta to solidify its position as one of the top port of calls in the Mediterranean. 2020 will be an important year for Valletta Cruise Port, which operates both the cruise passenger terminal and Valletta Waterfront, and is a subsidiary of Global Ports Holdings. Holland America Line president Orlando Ashford and Seabourn president Rick Meadows are both set to leave the Carnival Corporation family at the end of May 2020. Sea Cloud Cruises will put new ship Sea Cloud Spirit into service later than previously planned after safeguarding restrictions related to the Covid-19 pandemic forced the shipyard in Vigo, Spain to halt work for several weeks.
