US President Donald Trump on Saturday said that he would nominate a woman to succeed late US Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The president’s desire to "to move quickly" on the process, despite Democrats’ vehement opposition, is likely to dominate the campaigns — alongside other hot-button issues such as COVID-19 and the US’ ongoing racial reckoning — ahead of the Nov. 3 election. "I think it’s going to move quickly actually," Trump told reporters outside the White House, adding that he thought his choice would be made "next week.".

This year’s ferocious wildfires on the US west coast are taking a heavy toll on exhausted firefighters who see no end in sight to the blazes, with the COVID-19 pandemic adding another layer of risk. For Chula Vista Fire Department Battalion Chief Darrell Roberts, a 20-year veteran firefighter in California, the more than two dozen major wildfires raging across the state and the unprecedented scale of the blazes are a stark reminder of climate change and the new normal. "When resources are stripped thin and literally every firefighter is out on the front lines, and you have firefighters coming from all over.

In a dramatic last-gasp turnaround Tadej Pogacar on Saturday won the Tour de France as the overnight leader Primoz Roglic suffered a mountainside meltdown during a thrilling individual time-trial on the last day of real racing. It was a staggering end to a bizarre Tour and the penultimate stage duel between two compatriots of different generations is to go down as one of this year’s great sporting moments. The 21-year-old Pogacar was to lead the peloton into Paris yesterday wearing the overall leader’s yellow jersey and, barring a freak disaster, would climb onto the top step of the podium. "I cried, I’m sure.

Barcelona’s embattled club president has no intention of resigning after more than 20,000 club members signed a petition for Josep Bartomeu and his board to face a censure vote. "No one is thinking about stepping down," Bartomeu told Catalan television TV3 on Saturday before Barcelona beat Elche 1-0 in its third and final preseason match. On Thursday the group of club members wanting a change in the leadership handed in 20,687 signatures calling for a referendum over whether the board should be removed. That surpassed the 16,520 signatures — the equivalent to 15 percent of all members — needed to force the vote.

Italians headed to the polls yesterday — to the alarm of virus experts — for a referendum and regional elections that could weaken the government and radically reshape the political landscape. Just a week after a Herculean effort by schools to reopen in line with last-minute COVID-19 rules, classrooms across the country were shut to pupils and transformed into ballot stations for the two-day vote. A triumph for the far-right in the fiercely fought campaign would sound alarm bells in Brussels. It was the first test for Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte’s center-left coalition government since it imposed an economically crippling nationwide lockdown.

Taiwanese Americans on Saturday staged a motorcade in Los Angeles to urge US citizens whose families hail from Taiwan to register as "Taiwanese" when they complete this year’s US census forms. Organized by the Taiwanese American Professionals-Los Angeles (TAP-LA), the motorcade was aimed at promoting self-identity, seeking greater representation and raising funds, the group said. People of Taiwanese origin are encouraged to "to say who we are, and make it count in the official census," TAP-LA deputy head Cindy Lee (李佩璇) said. "My parents are from Taiwan, and as a Taiwanese, I’m proud to inherit that legacy, and I’m.

The Central Epidemic Command Center’s (CECC) specialist advisory panel is considering whether the policy of testing all travelers from the Philippines for COVID-19 should continue to be implemented, center spokesman Chuang Jen-hsiang (莊人祥) said yesterday. The panel last week discussed the issue, but the conclusion it reached has not yet been approved, said Chuang, who is also the deputy director-general of the Centers for Disease Control. Although the number of daily confirmed cases reported in the Philippines has dropped from as many as 6,000 cases a day during a previous peak period to about 3,000 to 4,000 cases per day, the figure.

US President Donald Trump on Saturday said that he had approved a deal allowing Silicon Valley giant Oracle Corp to become the data partner for TikTok to avert a shutdown of the massively popular Chinese-owned video app that Washington has called a security risk. The deal, announced by the companies, also includes Walmart Inc as a commercial partner and would create a new US company named TikTok Global. "I think it’s going to be a fantastic deal," Trump said.

Chinese military aircraft approaching Taiwan over the past two days demonstrates that Beijing is a threat to the entire region, and has shown Taiwanese even more clearly the true nature of China’s government, President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) said yesterday. Multiple Chinese aircraft flew across the median line of the Taiwan Strait and into Taiwan’s air defense identification zone on Friday and Saturday.

The Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) on Thursday said that it is offering to safely destroy damaged, unused, outdated or broken electronic devices handed in by members of the public in response to concerns over the safety of personal information stored on such devices. As data on disposed hardware might still be accessed, safely destroying the devices is important, the EPA said, adding that it would offer the service until Jan. 14 next year. The agency said it is collaborating with department stores, appliance stores and convenience stores, along with recycling facilities. Regarding tablet computers and mobile phones that can still be switched.
