Los Angeles beaches are plagued by stormwater pollution that can make people sick and damage ecosystems, and local governments are largely failing to address the hazards, according to a new report. The LA region has made little progress toward reducing pollution from stormwater, which is the single greatest source of pollutants in local rivers, lakes and the ocean, according to with Heal the Bay, a not-for-profit environmental organization.

Connecting the dots: Energy transfer (ET) from carbon dots embedded in crystalline Mn‐containing open‐framework matrices results in high‐efficiency red room‐temperature phosphorescence (RTP) emissions. Varying the carbon dot precursors and the heteroatom coordination geometries enables the emissions to be tuned from red to green/yellow. Abstract. High‐efficiency red room‐temperature phosphorescence (RTP) emissions have been achieved by embedding carbon dots (CDs) in crystalline Mn‐containing open‐framework matrices. The rationale of this strategy relies on two factors: 1) the carbon source, which affects the triplet energy levels of the resulting CDs and thus the spectral overlap and 2) the coordination geometry of the Mn atoms in the crysta.
Long time no C: Aculenes are a class of norsesquiterpenes (C14) that are derived from daucane sesquiterpenes (C15), but the biosynthetic basis of the demethylation remained unknown. Three novel P450 monooxygenases were discovered to catalyze a stepwise demethylation process, and a new ent‐daucane cyclase was also discovered. This work sheds light on how nature performs enzymatic demethylation and reveals new tools to expand chemical diversity. Abstract.
