The National Biodiesel Board (NBB), together with member companies, allied trade associations and industry partners, has called on the US Congress to extend the expired biodiesel tax incentive before the end of the year. The letter, which was sent to House and Senate leaders, attempts to highlight "that an immediate extension of the biodiesel tax incentive is needed to prevent a severe economic disruption of the US biodiesel industry.".

Renewable fuels producer Gevo has signed a fuel sales agreement with Scandinavian Airline System (SAS) to produce and supply sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for use and distribution in low-carbon fuel regions in the US. Under the new supply contract, Gevo will supply SAF to SAS from the producer’s expanded facility in Luverne, Minnesota, which is expected to be built over the next few years. “SAS is a pioneer in the use of sustainable aviation fuel, such as launching a new ancillary product that gives travellers the option to reduce their climate impact through the purchase of biofuel when booking a ticket, or at any time before departure,” commented Patrick Gruber, CEO of Gevo. “This agreement is another step in that innovative approach to.

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has initiated the roll-out of 500,000 ethanol cooking stoves to households across Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. Speaking on behalf of the District Commissioner for Ilala, the District Administrative Secretary thanked the joint efforts that will enable residents to be among the first to benefit from the ethanol-fuelled clean cooking technology. The new stoves will allow residents to switch from charcoal and wood fuel to the cleaner burning ethanol, which in turn also reduces deforestation,. UNIDO Representative for Tanzania and Mauritius, Stephan Kargbo, added that project will create employment through the local assembly of ethanol stoves, and will have a positive impact on the heal.

Japanese airline All Nippon Airways (ANA) has received its latest passenger aircraft from the US via a delivery flight that was powered with a blend of jet fuel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The brand new Boeing 777-300ER was flown from Boeing’s facility in Washington, US to Japan, using SAF made from waste gas derived ethanol from ethanol.

A new report released by the National Biodiesel Board (NBB) in the US has shown how the nation’s emerging biodiesel industry relies on the combined values of the tax credit and Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) credits in order to compete with fossil-based diesel in the current market. Sunway Hotels & Resorts, the hospitality division of Malaysia’s Sunway Group, has teamed up with FatHopes Energy to recycle its used cooking oil into biodiesel. Through the new initiative, over half of the participating Sunway Hotels’ used cooking oil will be collected and recycles by FatHopes Energy on a weekly basis at the hotels’ respective collection centres, to then be converted into biodiesel. Dutch airline KLM has welcomed SHV Energy as the latest member to join its Corporate Biofuel Programme (KCBP), as the clean energy company commits to reducing carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions at its headquarters by 50%. SHV Energy is the world’s largest distributor of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), in addition to providing liquefied natural gas (LNG) and bioLPG to those without access to the grid. Australian airline group Qantas has announced its intentions to reach zero carbon emission by 2050, in a major expansion of its commitment to a more sustainable aviation industry. Effective 11 November 2019, the airline will immediately double the number of flights being offset, cap net emissions from 2020 onwards, and invest AUD$50 million (€31 million) over a 10-year period to help develop a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) industry. The commitment makes Qantas the online airline group to pledge to cap its net emissions at 2020 levels, and is the second to commit to net zero emission by 2050. US ethanol producer Green Plains has recorded a net loss of $39.0 million (€35.3 million) for the third quarter of 2019, due in large part to a ‘continued weak ethanol margin environment’. The company reported revenues of $632.4 million (€572.5 million) for the three-month period, down from the $789.0 million (€714.3 million) recorded in the third quarter of 2018. Commenting on the results, president and CEO Todd Becker said: "As expected, our third quarter results were attributable to a continued weak ethanol margin environment that began to show improvement in late September.

Renewable Energy Group (REG) has reported its third quarter results for 2019, highlighting ‘satisfactory’ performance in spite of uncertainty surrounding the lapsed biodiesel tax credit and the increased number of small refinery exemptions under the Trump administration. Revenues for the quarter were $584.4 million (€527.2 million) from 187.5 million gallons of fuel sold.

Renewable fuels producer Gevo has teamed up with Germany-based blockchain company Blocksize Capital to track the sustainability of renewable products, including biofuels. Blocksize provides distributed ledger technology (DTL), more commonly known as blockchain, a tool that allows tracking of data with a product and the transactions associated with the product. Gevo and Blocksize have discovered that it is possible to attach the key metrics for sustainability to gallons of fuel, enabling a ‘sustainability’ assurance that has not yet been used.
