Achieving sustainable growth requires smart new approaches and technologies. The circular economy moves away from linear “take-make-waste” behaviours—extracting resources, making products, using them, and then throwing them away—and finds ways to keep the value of resources in the economy while helping to address key environmental challenges like climate change.
Today, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Jonathan Wilkinson, announced that Canada will host the World Circular Economy Forum 2020, co-organized by the Government of Canada and the Finnish innovation fund Sitra. The Forum will be held in Toronto, Ontario—from September 29 to October 1, 2020—marking the very first time the global forum is held in North America.
On November 12, 2019, K-G Spray-Pak Inc. (of Concord, Ontario) was ordered to pay a fine of $170,000 in the Ontario Court of Justice. The company pleaded guilty to two offences under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999, including one count of violating the Environmental Emergency Regulations and one count of failing to comply with an environmental protection compliance order.
On September 24, 2019, a guilty plea was entered on behalf of Magical Aquarium Club Inc. in the Ontario Court of Justice to a charge laid under the Wild Animal and Plant Protection and Regulation of International and Interprovincial Trade Act. The company received a $35,000 penalty, which will be directed toward the Government of Canada’s Environmental Damages Fund.
