Penn State’s Institute for CyberScience (ICS) announced that a new cloud computing environment has been added to its suite of high-performance computing offerings. This expanded capability provides Penn State researchers with more versatile, and potentially more cost-effective, computing resource options. Zenotech is launching a new two-year project, Aerospace Cloud Services, to provide technology to enable the UK aerospace sector to add competitiveness to simulation-based design by accessing cloud HPC cost-effectively and securely. "Aerospace Cloud Services will use Zenotech’s HPC product, EPIC, as its delivery framework, extending it to include specific requirements from the aerospace companies involved. Today quantum startup Q-CTRL announced a global partnership to power superconducting ‘quantum accelerators’ from Bleximo, a full-stack quantum computing startup based in Berkeley, Calif. This timely article from our friends over at Univa examines methods for reigning in costs for managing HPC in the cloud, specifically moving beyond cloud automation to cloud expense management. Three proactive approaches for managing costs in the cloud are provided. Special focus is given to Univa’s Navops Launch which is among the first of a new generation of HPC cloud automation tools that combines multi-cloud provisioning, cloud-service expense management, and tight integrations with Univa Grid Engine, and open-source SLURM workload managers both widely used in HPC centers. .

Harvard has deployed a liquid-cooled supercomputer from Lenovo at it's FASRC computing center. The system, named "Cannon" in honor of astronomer Annie Jump Cannon, is a large-scale HPC cluster supporting scientific modeling and simulation for thousands of Harvard researchers. "This new cluster will have 30,000 cores of Intel 8268 "Cascade Lake" processors. Each node will have 48 cores and 192 GB of RAM.". .

Alan Edelman, professor of applied mathematics at MIT, has been selected to receive the 2019 IEEE Sidney Fernbach Award. Edelman was cited for “for outstanding breakthroughs in high-performance computing, linear algebra, and computational science and for contributions to the Julia programming language. In this video, John Stone from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign discusses the role of CUDA and GPUs in processing large datasets to visualize and simulate high-resolution atomic structures. CUDA does this by allowing researchers to describe hundreds of thousands to millions of independent, data-parallel work units and write software that executes on those work units, all while achieving peak hardware performance. .
