Shortly after US President Donald Trump told reporters in Ohio that he expected a "red wave" in the US presidential elections on Nov. 3, it was reported on Saturday that he has told Republican donors that it would be "tough" for the party to hold on to the US Senate. Trump trails former US vice president Joe Biden, the Democratic Party’s candidate, in most national and battleground state polls. Democrats hold the US House of Representatives and expect to keep it, while many forecasters think they have a good chance of retaking the Senate, which Republicans hold 53-47, thereby achieving unified government.

Thousands of people yesterday protested in the center of Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, in the first demonstration since Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha ignored pro-democracy advocates’ Saturday night deadline to resign. It was also the first major show of force since Prayuth lifted the Oct. 15 emergency measures that had been meant to stop three months of protests against the government and monarchy, but which brought tens of thousands of people onto the streets. "If he doesn’t resign, then we must come out to ask him to quit in a peaceful way," protest leader Jatupat "Pai" Boonpattararaksa said yesterday as people chanted "Prayuth.

Nigeria’s top police official on Saturday ordered the immediate mobilization of all officers to "reclaim the public space from criminal elements masquerading as protesters" after days of peaceful demonstrations over police abuses and then violent unrest that left at least 69 people dead. The police order could further heighten tensions in Africa’s most populous country after its worst turmoil in years. Nigerian Police Inspector General M.A. Adamu told colleagues to "dominate the public space," while announcing that enough is enough, a statement said. The government has insisted that the protests were hijacked by thugs who looted and burned vehicles and businesses in.

A winter basketball tournament consisting of 21 teams, aimed at consolidating friendship among Filipinos in Taiwan, was launched in Taoyuan yesterday, with hundreds gathering for the opening ceremony and the first three games. The opening ceremony of the Kalinga Basketball League Nankan featured a march-past, during which the teams, consisting of more than 400 Filipinos, were judged on best uniforms and best muses. Tournament organizers, members of the Cordillera Organization in Taiwan (COT), also played a gong — known as a gangsa — as members of the Filipino community performed a traditional dance to welcome guests and bring a festive.

One hoped for a "legitimate" constitution, the other believed Chile’s problems can be resolved without a new one — two voters on opposite sides laid out their arguments ahead of yesterday’s referendum, and said the choice facing the country is a tricky one. Ernesto Quintana said he would be ticking Apruebo ("I agree") for "reasons of ethics and legitimacy" when he got to his Santiago polling center yesterday. The current constitution prevents social progress, he said. "The current constitution ...

A bank teller in Miaoli County prevented a woman from falling for an online dating scam, as they deemed her attempt to transfer US$500 abroad suspicious. The teller informed the police after a woman, surnamed Huang (黃), on Wednesday last week requested the transfer to a Chinese bank account. Huang said that the money was emergency funding for her "husband," a person who goes by the name James, who she connected with about six months ago through an online dating app, the Jhunan Township (竹南) police precinct said. Three officers persuaded Huang that she was the target of a scam. Although the two had.

Frequently purchasing collectible items or eating large meals indicates that a person is engaging in "retail therapy," a psychologist said on Saturday, adding that the trend could be attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic. Collecting items such as figurines or toys is a way of dealing with stress, especially for those living in urban environments and experiencing stress in the workplace, counseling psychologist Yang Chien-yeh (楊茜燁) said. Citing one of her clients as an example, Yang said that she recently helped a male office worker who turned to collecting figurines from the Dragon Ball animated TV series to reconnect with his youth.

An oil leak from a freighter that sank off the coast of Kaohsiung on Friday is not expected to cause an environmental crisis, the Ocean Conservation Administration (OCA) said yesterday. The Tuvalu-registered Seatran Ferry 12 , which was carrying 36 tonnes of diesel oil and 500kg of lubricating oil, lost power and sank in open seas about 28 nautical miles (52km) southwest of Kaohsiung. The Coast Guard Administration managed to rescue five of its crew members, but five others were still missing yesterday. All of the crew are believed to be Thai, the coast guard said. The OCA has been monitoring the.
