The purpose of this study was to elucidate the characteristics of dental malpractice trials undertaken by medical malpractice divisions and ordinary divisions in district courts. Dentistry disputes in a total of 84 trials held between 1977 and 2014 were investigated. A total of 45 were conducted by medical malpractice divisions, resulting in 18 approvals and 27 dismissals, while 39 were undertaken by ordinary divisions, leading to 24 approvals and 15 dismissals. The parameters analyzed compri...

Narrowing of the maxillary dental arch is a major cause of occlusal abnormalities in cleft lip and palate patients. Although the dental arch may be expanded in such cases, relapse will often occur during the subsequent retention period. In this study, the stability of expansion of the maxillary arch was investigated by examining 3-dimensional change in the maxillary arch during the treatment and post-retention periods. Three-dimensional measurements was performed on maxillary plaster models o...

Here, we report a case in which acupuncture combined with trigger point injection was effective in a patient with chronic myofascial pain with referred pain in the masticatory muscles. The patient was a 46-year-old woman with the chief complaint of chronic persistent pain in the region of the left mandibular first molar, which had been extracted 5 months earlier. Stellate ganglion block was performed and amitriptyline administered at another hospital, but were ineffective. At her initial visi...

The aim of this study was to investigate the condition of the maxillary lateral incisors and evaluate the methods used for cleft closure in patients with cleft lip and palate, including the treatment of the maxillary lateral incisors. A total of 214 patients (260 clefts) with alveolar clefts who had started Phase II treatment and entered the maintenance period at the Department of Orthodontics at Tokyo Dental College, Chiba Hospital, between 1975 and 2014 were included. Panoramic, intraoral, ...

Population flow between Southeast Asian countries and Japan continues to gather pace. Accordingly, the number of foreigners involved in incidents in Japan has markedly increased, which means that forensic dentistry is now increasingly being faced with the need to analyze DNA from persons of non-Japanese extraction. The DNA test currently used for personal identification mainly utilizes short tandem repeats (STRs) on autosomal chromosomes and the Y-chromosome. This test was developed for use i...

The recent use of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in the field of dentistry to obtain 3-dimensional (3D) images has enabled more effective examination and diagnosis in endodontic treatment. Such information has also been reported to be of benefit in surgical endodontic treatment such as intentional replantation. Here, we report a case of intentional replantation with the assistance of CBCT in which a good therapeutic outcome was achieved. The patient was a 30-year-old woman who visited o...

Occlusal reconstruction comprising orthodontic treatment, autotransplantation, and implant treatment was performed in a 30-year-old woman with missing maxillary anterior teeth. An initial examination revealed marked root resorption of the maxillary anterior teeth. Both the maxillary canines were missing, causing constriction of the dental arch. Conserving the right maxillary central and lateral incisors, which were dislocated due to trauma, was considered to be too difficult, and a bridge was...

Bleeding on probing (BOP) reflects the presence of gingival inflammation but does not provide detailed information on the severity of inflammation. The purpose of this study was to measure human gingival hemodynamics, specifically tissue oxygen saturation (StO2) and blood flow (BF), to clarify the relationship between the gingival hemodynamics and the severity of gingivitis.
J-Stage 06/25/2020 13:25
In this study, the difference in the local hemodynamics between healthy and inflamed gingiva was clarified by simultaneous measurement of the StO2 and BF. In addition, the changes in the StO2 after brushing differed between healthy gingiva and inflamed gingiva, indicating that measurement of the gingival hemodynamics could serve as a useful method for quantitative evaluation of the severity of gingival inflammation.

The patient reported herein was receiving a calcium channel blocker for the control of hypertension associated with polycystic kidney presented with chronic periodontitis and drug-induced gingival overgrowth. Examination revealed a periodontal probing pocket depth (PPD) of more than 4 mm in 55% of the sites, and of more than 6 mm in 28% of the sites. Gingival overgrowth was observed in both the upper and lower jaws, and on both the buccal and lingual sides of the interdental area. At the init...

Although the association between diabetes mellitus and periodontitis has been well studied, the association between diabetes and the masticatory function has not yet been elucidated. In this cross-sectional study, we attempted to clarify this association by analyzing the data of 204 type 2 diabetes patients hospitalized for an education program [126 men and 76 women; age 24-86 years (mean age 57 years) ]. The glycosylated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels were obtained from the medical records. T...

Previous studies have reported the usefulness of tooth brushes equipped with a built-in titanium oxide (TiO2) electrode and solar cell. This study was aimed at evaluating the effects of brushing with SOLADEY N4® (Shiken) by investigating the change of clinical parameters. A total of 10 patients undergoing supportive periodontal therapy at Nippon Medical School Chiba Hokusoh Hospital Dental Clinic were selected for this crossover study. After providing tooth brushing instructions (TBI), the pa...

Human CYP3A4 is involved in metabolisms of diverse hydrophobic chemicals. Using the data of therapeutic azole fungicides known to interact with CYP3A4, applicability of CYP3A4 Template system was first confirmed to reconstitute faithfully the interaction on Template. More than twenty numbers of pesticide azoles were then applied to the Template system. All the azole stereo-isomers applied, except for talarozole, interacted through nitrogen atoms of triazole or imidazole parts and sat stably f...

The Food Safety Commission of Japan (FSCJ) conducted a risk assessment of betamethasone (CAS No. 37-44-9), a synthetic adrenocortical hormone, based on the documents including assessment reports from the European Medicines Evaluation Agency (EMEA). Among results of various studies, a no-observed-adverse-effect level (NOAEL) of betamethasone (as betamethasone dipropionate) was shown as 0.02 mg/kg bw per day in a fertility and early embryonic development study in rats. FSCJ concluded that it is...

Colistin is a critically important antibiotic for humans. The Japanese government withdrew colistin growth promoter and shifted therapeutic colistin to a second-choice drug for pigs in 2017. A quantitative release assessment of mcr-mediated colistin-resistant Escherichia coli (E. coli) in Japanese finisher pigs was conducted under the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) risk assessment framework. Input data included colistin resistance and mcr-1-5 test results for E. coli isolates in t...

The present study used an aluminum phantom to calculate accurate vertical magnification values around the mental foramen on panoramic radiography (PR) and compared corrected PR (Cor-PR) thickness measurements of the aluminum phantom and mandibular cortical width (MCW) of the human head with cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) measurements at two fields of view (FOVs).

The purpose of this study was to determine the depth of cure and the type and amount of monomers released from bulk-fill composites in different curing protocols. Five different composite resins Filtek Bulk-Fill Posterior, Filtek Bulk-Fill Flowable, SureFil SDR, X-tra Fil, and X-tra base, were used. A light-emitting diode (LED) device was used in 3 different modes (standard, high power, and extra power mode), and a halogen light device was also used as a control. Surface hardness was measured...
