Climate change will leave some farmers with a difficult conundrum, according to a new study by researchers from Cornell and Washington State University: either risk more revenue volatility or live with a more predictable decrease in crop yields. As water shortages and higher temperatures drive down crop yields in regions that depend heavily on seasonal snow, the choice to use more drought-tolerant crop varieties comes at a cost, according to model projections detailed in the paper “Water Rights Shape Crop Yield and Revenue Volatility Tradeoff for Adaptation in Snow Dependent Systems,” published July 10 in Nature Communications.

New research has revealed the genetics underpinning an ecological defence used by maize plants to guard against caterpillar pests, involving interactions with natural enemies of the pest. Certain plants, with the right genetics, have an ability to recruit wasps as “bodyguards” against pests. This information will provide a crucial resource both for maize breeders wanting to promote the trait in their crops, and for farmers seeking to improve biological control of pests. These findings could be a game changer in agricultural ecosystems allowing a reduced dependency on pesticide use. The BBSRC funded study, led by Keele’s Professor Toby Bruce in collaboration with scientists at icipe and ICRISAT in Kenya, investigated genetic variation betwee.

With about 15 wiliwili trees in the Lilly Greenhouses, and only 150 left in the wild after an insect pest decimated its population, Purdue oversees an important concentration of this deciduous tree native to Hawaii. Scott McAdam, assistant professor of botany and plant pathology, has been growing the trees for three years. His research broadly focuses on drought responses in land plants. When the campus shut down in March due to the coronavirus outbreak, McAdam and his graduate student, Cade Kane, were studying the mechanisms that trigger the wiliwili to shed its leaves to survive the dry season. Such experiments last three to four months.

A genomic mapping technique developed in part at Florida State University has played a crucial role in a new study aimed at understanding growth in corn, a major U.S. crop. Professor of Biological Science Hank Bass and colleagues at FSU have refined the technique, called chromatin sensitivity profiling, over the past decade. They used it to help a team of researchers, led by Andrea Eveland, assistant member of the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in St. Louis, in mapping the maize genome during an early developmental stage that is critical to plant yield. Their study was recently published in the journal Genome Biology.

Modern agriculture faces enormous challenges to produce sufficient healthy food and quality industrial crops, and preserve wildlife, natural resources and biodiversity, under changing and variable climatic conditions. Long term changes in climatic parameters such as temperature, rainfall, humidity creates extra pressure of climate change impact. Climate change is not only more heat and drought but also a more variable climate. Agriculture is one of the most vulnerable sectors to climatic hazards. Breeding climate-smart varieties responds not only to climatic requirements but also to the preferences of producers and end consumers. Climate-smart varieties allow producers to have very good harvests in an unfavorable environment marked by clima.

Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO, is leading a research project to understand and manage fall armyworm (FAW), a transboundary pest threatening crop production across South East Asia and Oceania. The project will provide an understanding of the pest’s genetic make-up and insecticide sensitivities to see which practices are the most effective for managing FAW. This will help develop effective pest management plans. CSIRO researcher and project leader Dr Wee Tek Tay said FAW was capable of damaging various crops, including maize, sorghum, cotton, ginger and sugarcane.

The COVID-19 pandemic affects food security and food systems in many low- and middle-income countries, according to a survey conducted by alumni of Wageningen Centre for Development Innovation. The survey proved to be a quick and practical way to gain insights into the field – including what corona-smart agriculture might look like. The survey was held among alumni of the course on climate change adaptation of Wageningen Centre for Development Innovation. Out of 23 countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia, there were 57 responses. These alumni are mid-career professionals working at universities, NGOs or government agencies and have hands-on experience and direct contact with farmers and other key players in the food system.

The Soil Health Partnership’s Cover Crop Planting Report shows that farmers are using diverse strategies to plant cover crops and a variety of plant species to accomplish their soil health goals. SHP is the flagship sustainability program of the National Corn Growers Association. They conducted a detailed survey on cover crops with more than 80 farmers across 11 states in the SHP network about cover crop usage on their trial sites in the fall of 2019.
