Diamond sales brought Angola revenues of $294.85-million during the third quarter of this year. This represented an 11.7% increase over the figure for the same period last year – or, in monetary terms, a rise of $30.7-million. This information was released in Luanda early this month by the State-owned Sociedade de Comercialização de Diamantes de Angola (the Diamond Commercialisation Company of Angola, better known by its Portuguese acronym, Sodiam), the Macauhub news agency reported.

British Australian mining giant Rio Tinto has indicated that it intends to exercise its options under a 2017 option-and-joint-venture agreement with Saskatoon-based explorer Star Diamonds, which owns the Fort a la Corne kimberlites in central Saskatchewan. TSX-listed Star Diamonds announced on Friday that Rio Tinto Exploration Canada (RTEC) would exercise all four options – years earlier than the major had to – giving it a 60% interest in the Star-Orion South project.

Indian miner NMDC’s iron-ore assets at Dantewada in the central state of Chhattisgarh came under attack from ultra-left-wing extremists on Sunday. According to reports available from the district, the ultra-left extremists, popularly known as naxalites, stormed into the iron-ore mining facility at Dantewada and set fire to trucks and dumpers before fleeing into the adjacent dense forests.

Bargain hunters have helped molybdenum recover after prices crashed to two-year lows, but ample supplies of the metal used to make stainless steel mean further significant gains for now are unlikely, analysts say. Prices of the metal, valued for its anti-corrosive and strengthening properties in the oil and gas and automotive industries, fell towards $8/lb two weeks ago.

Bougainville Vice President Raymond Masono said he will revive a plan to overhaul the region's mining laws after its ongoing independence referendum, which could strip the former operator of the Panguna gold and copper project of its interests. The proposed changes, which have been criticised by Panguna landowners, would also erase an interest in the project held by the Papua New Guinea government, potentially complicating negotiations between the two governments after the referendum.

India’s Coal Ministry has directed State-run miners Coal India Limited and Singareni Collieries Company Limited to hold special auctions for coal supply to power projects categorised as nonperforming assets as a result of a lack of fuel supplies. As per a directive issued by the Ministry, the two coal companies are to start holding the special coal supply auctions for stressed thermal power projects from February next year.

India’s second largest oil and gas exploration and production company, State-run Oil India Limited (OIL), will pick up a majority stake in standalone oil refinery, Numaligarh Refineries Limited (NRL). The consolidation of operations of OIL and State-run NRL comes close on the heels of the latter entering into the oil and gas exploration business vertical having acquired participatory interest in two blocks in the north-eastern state of Assam.

Low inventories across the copper supply chain mean that any resolution to the US–China trade war could trigger a snap rally in prices as consumers rush to restock, market participants said on Tuesday. Combined stocks of on-warrant copper in London Metal Exchange and Shanghai exchange warehouses have declined 50.5% since mid-August metal buyers have slowed replenishment rates.
