The country's top court upheld Thursday a lower court ruling that convicted ex-President Lee Myung-bak of embezzlement and taking bribes from a conglomerate and sentenced him to 17 years in prison. This means the Supreme Court has confirmed the principle that everyone is equal before the law. Lee should now be imprisoned to serve his remaining sentence after he was released in February on bail after staying in jail for one year.

North Korea said Friday that South Korea is the first to blame for the death of a fisheries official killed at sea last month because the South failed to exercise proper control over its citizen. But the North also said such an "accidental" incident should not lead inter-Korean relations to a "catastrophe." It also said it tried its best, unsuccessfully, to search for the body of the South Korean official to return it to his family.
