Ohio-based Progressive Insurance has announced plans to hire up to 8,000 employees this year across the U.S., and 1,000 of those are planned for Tampa. The 1,000 jobs in Tampa will be in customer sales, service, multiproduct sales, claims representatives, bilingual Spanish sales and customer service, according to a release. Another 270 are expected to be hired in St. Petersburg for property claims, property customer service and information technology jobs.

A Mexican restaurant driven by a Michelin star chef will open in Sparkman Wharf this spring. JoToro, by chef Joe Isidori, will be a 220-seat restaurant in the space long occupied by Hooters. Tampa's Moffitt Cancer Center now has a footprint in Pasco County after purchasing 775 acres. H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute paid $23.5 million to close on the property in late January, Pasco County records show. For the first time, online platforms such as Airbnb would have to collect and remit taxes on vacation rental properties, ensure that only properly licensed rentals are advertised and provide the state with specific information about the rentals, under a proposal headed to the House floor. The Sunshine State’s solar energy industry is growing. A recent report by The Solar Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing solar energy, found Florida added 1,843 solar jobs in 2019 — the largest increase among U.S. states. More than 40 local employees were laid off from Bisk Education in a realignment of the company.
