12 Aug 2020 --- Coca-Cola European Partners (CCEP) has adopted CanCollar paperboard-based ring technology for its multipack cans in the Balearic Islands, Spain. The PEFC-certified, recyclable and sustainably-sourced CanCollar replaces the current Hi-cone plastic ring solution, saving more than 18 tons of plastic annually. Spain is the first European country where CanCollar paperboard-based rings will launch on multipack cans, with further European rollouts anticipated.

In the release of its Full Year Results ended June 30, 2020, the flavor powerhouse acknowledges that it is operating in a context of “unparalleled uncertainty.” Despite facing significant global challenges as a result of COVID-19, Firmenich has seen growth of 2.8 percent on a local currency basis, bringing group revenue up to CHF 3,878 million (US$4,241 million).

10 Aug 2020 --- The hard seltzers market is marked for dramatic growth, despite setbacks due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This is according to global ingredients manufacturer Treatt who has named 2020 categorically “the year of the hard seltzer.” Before the novel coronavirus hit, these light, ready-to-drink (RTD) alcoholic beverages were set to take off at festivals, parties and in the travel sector, according to the company. While the canceling of large summer gatherings may have delayed growth in the sector, Treatt asserts that the strong health appeal of hard seltzers across geographical and gender demographics will drive continued expansion in the category.

10 Aug 2020 --- Bruker Corporation has joined forces with Utrecht University, in the Netherlands, to advance the study of the 3-D structures and interactions of proteins by mass spectrometry. The laboratory of Dutch scientist and Professor Albert Heck at Utrecht University has been a leader in proteomics and the study of protein structure and interactions by mass spectrometry for over two decades. Richard Scheltema recently joined Utrecht University as group leader to focus on crosslinking mass spectrometry (XL-MS) for structural and interaction proteomics.

According to Luca Pennestri, General Manager for Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) at Layn, each region has its own methods and standards for clean label. In many cases, they also vary from country to country. “We see these [methods] all aligned under the common goal of the clean label. The objective is to provide healthier ingredients and make the label easier to understand. This is to allow all consumers to understand what product they are consuming and what it contains,” he tells FoodIngredientsFirst .
