Iraq After Soleimani: What is the Future for US Troops? By Nafiseh Kohnavard - BBC News. "Incoming, Incoming!" The loudspeaker screeches out a warning of a rocket attack at Union III, the US-led coalition base in Iraq's capital, Baghdad. The compound is in the Green Zone, an area built around what was once former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein's palace. A few seconds after the first alarm, we hear two loud explosions. Then another announcement, ordering everyone in the base to take cover. Just across the road lies the US embassy, the likely target of the three Katyusha rockets. After an hour, we are told it is safe enough to come out. One rocket fell into the nearby Tigris river, but two landed inside the embassy compound. "This isn't the first.

Afghanistan at an Impasse. SWJED. Fri, 01/24/2020 - 8:51am. The war in Afghanistan is at an impasse. The current and next U.S. administrations will have to grapple with the aftereffects of an 18-year campaign in a country that has been at war for over 40 years. The war in the field is a stalemate. Neither side seems able to win. At home and abroad, among friends and even some enemies, war weariness and a desire for peace is very much in evidence, even as the fighting continues. Neither side has been able to find a path to a negotiated settlement. or to post comments.

Factions within the Afghan government and Washington differ over whether they are willing to accept a reduction in violence or expect a complete cease-fire in the wake of an agreement between the United States and the Taliban. This step is considered important for jumpstarting negotiations between the Taliban, the Afghan government, and other parties for sharing po.

US SOUTHERN COMMAND HEADQUARTERS, Miami — Secretary of Defense Mark Esper has begun a review of U.S. Southern Command, which could lead to cuts to the regional combatant command — or perhaps increased resources at a time that China and Russia are ramping up activity in the region. Those decisions will largely be driven by the needs of the National Defense Strategy. He hopes to have the reviews done by Oct. 1, the start of the next fiscal year. SWJ Book Review - All Hell Breaking Loose: The Pentagon’s Perspective on Climate Change. SWJED. Fri, 01/24/2020 - 3:55am. One of the most impressive things about this book is its readability. Reading government reports is dry stuff. Yet here, Klare has carefully gleaned the Pentagon’s view of Climate Change from abstruse and difficult to come by reports to give us a highly readable 20,000-foot view of the literature. I read it leisurely in just over two days in my free time. or to post comments.

Backgrounder: Why U.S. Troop Cuts in Africa Would Cause Alarm. – Associated Press. Even as destroyed U.S. military aircraft smoldered from an al-Shabab attack that this month in Kenya, the al-Qaida-linked group issued a taunting message to African troops: The U.S. will abandon you the Kurds.
