WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House medical team kept a close eye on President Donald Trump's heart rhythms, including at least one electrocardiogram, to watch for potential side effects when he took a two-week course of a malaria drug to try to prevent the coronavirus, his doctor reported Wednesday. "The President completed the regimen safely and without side effects," Dr. Sean Conley wrote in a report on Trump's latest physical and his treatment with hydroxychloroquine. Overall, Conley said, Trump showed little change in basic health measurements from 16 months ago.
NEW YORK (AP) — Emergency room visits in the U.S. for chest pain and heart attacks fell early this spring, according to a study that supports fears that the coronavirus outbreak scared away people from going to the hospital. ER visits were up for respiratory illnesses and pneumonia, but were down for nearly every other kind of injury or ailment, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Wednesday. Overall, fewer ER patients showed up: Visits were down 42% in a four-week period that stretched from late March through most of April, compared to the same time last year. At the time, hospitals is some U.S. cities — most notably New York — were overwhelmed treating COVID-19 patients.
At least two U.S. senators said Wednesday that China hid data from the World Health Organization that could have altered the course of the coronavirus outbreak, even as a Chinese official denied delays in sharing information and said the government acted openly and transparently. They were referring to an Associated Press investigation published this week that found China stalled on providing critical coronavirus information to WHO, which expressed considerable frustration in private even as it praised the country in public.
BERLIN (AP) — Germany says the European Union and China have agreed to postpone a summit planned for Sept. 14 because of the coronavirus pandemic. Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke Wednesday with Chinese President Xi Jinping and later with European Council President Charles Michel. In a statement, Merkel's office said the three sides agreed that "the meeting can't take place at the envisaged time due to the overall pandemic situation."
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — A mother who lost custody of her terminally ill son to the state is fighting an effort to withhold life support measures and let the child die naturally. The Alabama Court of Civil Appeals ruled in favor of the mother Tuesday and threw out a juvenile court order allowing a court-appointed guardian for the child, —identified in the opinion only as K.H. — to implement an end-of-life plan that would withhold resuscitation measures. Because the case is in juvenile court, many of the details are unknown and it wasn’t clear what the next step might be.
NEW YORK (AP) — New York will start to allow outdoor dining at restaurants as soon as Thursday in much of the state outside of New York City and its suburbs as coronavirus restrictions ease, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Wednesday. Restaurants must place outdoor tables 6 feet (2 meters) apart, all staff must wear face coverings, and customers must also wear covering when not seated, under the rules Cuomo announced in a news release. The order applies to regions that have entered the second phase of Cuomo's four-step reopening plan, including the Capital region, western New York, central New York and the Finger Lakes. The areas that will have to wait for outdoor dining include Long Island and the mid-Hudson Valley, which entered the first phase of

The Latest on the coronavirus pandemic. COVID-19 causes mild or moderate symptoms for most people. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness or death. ___. BERLIN — Germany’s government says it plans to lift a travel warning for European countries on June 15 — but it may still advise against travel in some cases, for example to Britain if quarantine rules there remain in place. Germany issued a warning against all nonessential foreign travel in March. The aim is to change that for Germany’s 26 European Union partners, other countries outside the EU that are part of Europe’s passport-free Schengen travel area and Britain. Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said Wednesday that the war.
PARIS (AP) — There are bottles of sanitizer gel in place of the salt and pepper pots, and glaring 1-meter (3-foot) gaps between tables. But in Parisian restaurants and cafes, the mood is sunny. Locals are savoring their cafe au lait and croissants at the Left Bank’s famed Cafe de Flore, or on the cobbled streets of the ancient Le Marais, for the first time in almost three months. It’s a far cry from the depressing sight of shuttered eateries, chairs piled up blocking the windows and doors, and empty sidewalks.

Federal safety investigators bypassed aviation regulators on Tuesday and urged leading helicopter manufacturers to install so-called black boxes that would help determine the cause of crashes such as the one that killed former NBA star Kobe Bryant. The National Transportation Safety Board appealed directly to six manufacturers after the Federal Aviation Administration failed to act on the board's recommendations to require the devices on most helicopters.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The wife of singer-songwriter John Prine, who died from complications of COVID-19, urged lawmakers Tuesday to expand absentee voting so Tennesseans would not have to put their health at risk to exercise their right to vote. Fiona Whelan Prine, who also contracted the coronavirus and has since recovered, told a Senate panel that allowing more people to cast an absentee ballot is critical in ensuring that people would remain safe and healthy during the 2020 election. "This is not or should it be a partisan issues," said Whelan Prine, who spoke over a video livestream and did not attend in person.
TORONTO (AP) — Two of Canada’s three major telecommunication companies announced Tuesday they’ve decided not to use Chinese tech giant Huawei for their next-generation 5G wireless network. Bell Canada announced that Sweden-based Ericsson will be its supplier and Telus Corp. later announced that it had also selected Ericsson and Nokia. Canada and its security agencies have been studying whether to use equipment from Huawei as phone carriers prepare to roll out fifth-generation technology.
