Innovia Films, a major producer of highly differentiated specialty biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) films, is launching a new family of films it says is both functional and recyclable. The Encore BOPP films are manufactured from renewable non-food based raw materials, which the company based in Wigton, United Kingdom, says helps to reduce the use of fossil fuel-based virgin raw materials. Lactips, a young French company that has developed a bio-sourced, biodegradable and water-soluble alternative for numerous industrial plastics, has raised 13 million euros ($14.8 million) in new capital, in a funding round led by Bpifrance’s SPI (Société de Projet Industriel) fund, managed on behalf of the French Government as part of the Investments for the Future Program (PIA), and Diamond Edge Ventures (DEV), the innovation investment arm of Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings Corporation (MCHC). What are the 'things that we don't need to do'? As the auto industry scrambles to recover from the coronavirus shutdown, automakers are looking to cut costs. That's not a surprise. General Motors Co. CEO Mary Barra said during an investor event with Credit Suisse that GM's decisions now could lead to permanent changes. Those changes could mean fewer vehicle platforms or fewer options on trim levels to focus on what consumers want. The pandemic, Barra said, has given GM the chance to expenses and eliminate redundant processes. "We've found things that we don't need to do and things we can do more efficiently," Barra said. Sesotec GmbH, a German manufacturer of metal detectors and X-ray systems for inspection, sorting and material analysis, has opened a sales, service and training center in Guelph, Ontario. Called Sesotec Canada, the subsidiary opened in early May to sell and service machines and systems for the food and plastics industries that can detect foreign object and analyze material. The work previously was handled by a Sesotec facility in Chicago. The Guelph showroom will have demonstration equipment and stock spare parts. Vincent Le Bourdais was named Sesotec Canada’s regional sales manager.

Tel Aviv, Israel-based start-up Nanofabrica raised $4 million to finance research and development and to expand sales of what it describes as the first ultra precise 3D printer. The latest round of funding was led by Microsoft’s venture fund, M12, and NextLeap Ventures brings the total raised to $7 million, according to a news release from Nanofabrica, which also lists Alpha Capital as an investor. "Nanoscale, precision manufacturing is a growing need for [research] organizations, as well as production-scale manufacturing companies," M12 Partner Matthew Goldstein said in the release.

The Conair Group has updated its web-based portal, SmartServices, with machine controls and programmable performance indicators to monitor, manage and analyze auxiliary equipment. The latest capabilities are the result of six-month trials by processors who shared their experiences and offered input for the Industry 4.0 program after Conair announced the trials at NPE 2018.
