Despite its association with kids, the joys of toy collecting have brought immense pleasure to adults across the globe — a passion that ensures a tangible attachment to the memories and dreams of their childhood. The thrill of the chase, the delight of securing an item that had once eluded you, that moment of ecstasy in thinking you've discovered something you don't yet own (only to find you actually do); it's all part and parcel when it comes to the hobby of toy collecting. "I [just] couldn't resist and started buying a few pieces as a means to connect with my childhood," reminisced 47-year-old Derek Ho.

Out of the kindness of his heart (and also partly due to clever entrepreneurship), a drinks vendor has taken it upon himself to maintain the hoops of a basketball court located along Hougang Avenue 6. As the online community got to learn over the weekend, a man known as Uncle Chen is said to have been fixing the nets of the basketball hoops every now and then for years — all done to see a steady stream of basketball players returning to the court. Though he bears the costs of maintenance by himself, Uncle Chen actually profits from the endeavour. By keeping the basketball community in the Sengkang and Hougang district happy, they’ll keep patronising his wares — the man sells mineral water and 100 Plus drinks out of his motorbike near the co.

HONG KONG - More than one in 10 retailers in Hong Kong could close down in the next six months as social unrest and sometimes violent protests deter tourists, threatening the survival of smaller operators, the city's main retailing group said on Monday. Some 7,000 licensed retail establishments out of 64,000 in the Asian financial hub say they will be forced to close down in the next six months, the Hong Kong Retail Management Association said (HKRMA) after surveying its members. The survey highlights the dire outlook for retailers after months of anti-Beijing protests, with Hong Kong normally a top shopping destination for Chinese tourists. Retail sales fell by a quarter in October from a year earlier, the steepest drop on record, while to.

Artificial-intelligence judges, cybercourts and verdicts delivered on chat apps - welcome to China's brave new world of justice. China is encouraging digitization to streamline case-handling within its sprawling court system using cyberspace and technologies like blockchain and cloud computing, the country's Supreme People's Court said in a new policy paper. The efforts include a "mobile court" offered on popular social media platform WeChat that has already handled more than 3 million legal cases or other judicial procedures since its launch in March, according to the Supreme People's Court. China may have gained a reputation as a surveillance state because it has more closed-circuit TV (CCTV) cameras deployed than any other country, but when it comes to per capita usage, the US is No 1. The US has 15.28 surveillance cameras per 100 citizens, slightly higher than China's density of 14.36, followed by the UK, Germany and the Netherlands, according to a report issued this week by computer security site Precisesecurity.com. Among the sea of faces on Hong Kong's streets on Sunday were more than one hundred people wearing quirky over-sized animal masks - a band of activists bringing popular protest Internet memes to life. Hong Kong's democracy movement is largely leaderless and organised online. LIHKG, a local Reddit-like web forum that serves as a virtual command centre for the movement, is filled with memes and a host of animal cartoon characters that have been embraced by activists. The most popular are a cute pig and a Shiba Inu dog, who often appear dressed in the movement's ubiquitous yellow tradesman helmets. The other is Pepe the Frog, who carries none of the far-right baggage he does in the West, used by Hong Kong protesters as an irreverent symbol of t.

The sight of European tourists baking under Singapore’s sweltering heat can seem comical, but Singaporeans’ own quest for cold weather destinations can baffle those who come from lands with temperate climates. For Singaporeans, there’s nothing like a series of Instagram pictures of yourself skiing on the powdery slopes of Niseko in Japan to cement your status as a well-travelled global citizen. But flying to countries where there is snow tends to be quite expensive, as none of the countries surrounding Singapore experience winter, let alone snow.

If you head to Bangkok, be prepared for sensory overload. When you walk out the door, numerous stalls selling street food line the path, their smells wafting up and mingling with the humid air. Looking up, gleaming high rise buildings stand proudly next to humble villas. Be careful that you don't look up for too long, though - a perpetual stream of motorbikes, buses, taxis and bicycles will whizz quickly by, unfazed by pedestrians. It's easy to feel overwhelmed by the number of things to see and do in an expansive city like Bangkok, and sure enough, visitors tend to gravitate toward the same things: The Grand Palace, MBK Shopping Center, and, of course, Khao San Road, infamous for being the party street of backpackers. While these places ho.

Japanese scientists will begin the country's first human trial for a new vaccine against the deadly Ebola virus this month, they said Friday. The vaccine, which has previously been tested in monkeys, uses an inactivated form of the virus that can only effectively replicate in artificial cells. Scientists hope that will make it safer than other treatments, the Institute of Medical Science at the University of Tokyo said in a press release. "We think there's high hope for a new, safe vaccine which can be produced effectively," Yoshihiro Kawaoka, a professor of infectious diseases at the university who helped developed the vaccine, said in the release. The university will begin the clinical study later in December, injecting 30 healthy adult m.

Not that there’s anything wrong with it (yay for body positivity, y’all), but Singapore’s Olympic gold medallist is looking a little… thick. The 24-year-old national swimmer has already won three golds and two silvers in the SEA Games currently taking place in the Philippines, but the haul is pretty much expected for the Olympic champ. What wasn’t expected though was his, er, bulkier frame — a far cry from his lean and mean bod in the months prior to the SEA Games. It’s something that national training centre head coach Gary Tan made a point to address on Saturday (Dec 7), assuring reporters that Schooling before the Tokyo Olympics next year. “There is some recognition of things that he needs to change, in the lifestyle part of it, especial.

LONDON - A deadly virus called Nipah carried by bats has already caused human outbreaks across South and South-east Asia and has "serious epidemic potential", global health and infectious disease specialists said on Monday (Dec 9). The virus, identified in 1999 in Malaysia and Singapore, has sparked outbreaks with mortality rates of between 40 per cent and 90 per cent and spread thousands of kilometres to Bangladesh and India - yet there are no drugs or vaccines against it, they said. "Twenty years have passed since its discovery, but the world is still not adequately equipped to tackle the global health threat posed by Nipah virus," said Mr Richard Hatchett, chief executive of the Cepi Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, which.
