There’s no denying that industry—like much of the rest of our lives—is undergoing a digital transformation. This transformation has been accelerating for decades on the consumer side, as witnessed in our move from desktops to mobile devices and from landline phones and cable boxes to smartphones and smart TVs. In industry, this same transformation has been taking place over the same time period, but at a much slower pace. However, it’s becoming more apparent that the pace of change in industry is about to speed up dramatically. Dana Inc. and Streamline Innovations show how digital transformations can start today in the discrete and process industries using Ignition to overcome legacy infrastructure’s digital shortcomings.

Industrial robots can fill many different roles in the manufacturing environment, including welding, painting, assembly, pick and place, packaging and labeling, palletizing, product inspection, and testing. As robotic systems become increasingly affordable and flexible, more factories are integrating robotics into their current processes. Nearly any repetitive task is a candidate for robotic replacement, but how do you know the best time to take the plunge into robotic systems? Answering the following four questions can help guide you and your team through the process. Robots in the manufacturing environment is becoming much more prevalent, but it hasn’t gotten any easier to implement. These four questions will help your organization figure.

In today’s world, safety seems to be at the forefront of many peoples’ mind. However, in the last century that was not always the case, particularly in manufacturing. I was recently involved with an upgrade project where the sole purpose was to add complex, safety protection to an old but powerful line of equipment that previously had none. The equipment was designed and placed into production sometime in the mid to late seventies—a time when the idea of safety was “out of sight, out of mind.”Safety in manufacturing is nothing new. And though an investment in safety can do so much for a manufacturing plant, it’s something that can easily be ignored or pushed to the side.

Like most technologies in the industrial automation sphere, networking technologies are typically installed for the long haul. In other words, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Industrial networking technologies and the cyberattacks they face have changed dramatically over the past several years. As a result, greater attention to network upgrade best practices is becoming increasingly critical to all industry verticals—not just critical infrastructure. Perspective.

On the plant floor, communication uptime in the manufacturing process is a top priority. And—for any business—ensuring the supply-chain process remains uninterrupted is also a top priority. Corporate and industry standards, and many other factors, play into the level of robustness and system availability on a network. A resilient network reduces the risk of unplanned downtime on the plant floor and application communication downtimes. Unplanned downtime is a significant detriment to any business. In order to make sure that processes remain uninterrupted, consider implementing these resiliency protocols when designing your industrial network infrastructure.
