Many people try to learn an instrument at one point or another in their life, and for a lot of us that instrument is the piano. But when you give up learning there’s no easy way back — not without paying for expensive lessons at least. Music hardware startup Roli wants to change this with the launch of Lumi: a 24-key, light-up keyboard and companion app that teaches users how to play the piano from scratch, before transforming into a tool for jamming and even composition. The keyboard and companion app are available to preorder on Kickstarter today with a base price of $249 (€249) and early bird sales offering Lumi as cheap as $146. Shipping starts in October. Apple has added a warning in iOS 13 beta 2 that appears when you try to uninstall an app which still has an active subscription. “Do you want to keep the subscription for this app?” the message reads, before giving you a link to manage your Apple ID subscriptions. The feature was first spotted by MacStories editor Federico Viticci . It’s a sensible move from Apple, after its App Store was hit by a plague of “free” apps that used a variety of shady tactics to extract money from unwitting users. Often these tactics revolve around aggressively coercing users into signing up to expensive subscriptions with unclear terms, in the hope that people either won’t notice or will forget to unsubscribe. If a user is uninstalling an app, then there’s...

Microsoft is considering adding a dedicated Office key to keyboards. The new key would provide additional keyboard shortcuts for Office apps, including the ability to quickly share documents and files. Microsoft has been conducting a survey with testers of the Office key, spotted by WalkingCat , and is getting feedback on how the dedicated key operates. Microsoft appears to suggest the key will replace the secondary Windows key on the right-hand side of a keyboard, or the dedicated menu key. Microsoft’s survey , which requires a work or school Microsoft account to access, includes questions around Office key shortcuts, and asks whether testers would like to see this dedicated key on laptops. Microsoft appears to be testing the concept with.

Microsoft To-Do is now available for Mac. The to-do list app is free on the Mac App Store , and its release means that Mac users will no longer have to rely on the service’s web app to keep track of their daily tasks. It includes all the major features you’d expect, including the ability to sync tasks between devices, attach files, share your lists with friends and colleagues, and set recurring due dates and reminders. Now that Microsoft To-Do is available on all major platforms (namely Windows 10, Mac, iOS, and Android) it’s one step closer to replacing Wunderlist, the to-do list app that Microsoft acquired back in 2015 . When Microsoft first released To-Do in 2017 it said that its plan was to eventually have it replace Wunderlist, once...

Wacom is releasing a new stylus for pen-enabled Windows 10 PCs that adds tilt support and a rechargeable battery. The new stylus, the Bamboo Ink Plus, supports both the Microsoft Pen Protocol (MPP) and the Wacom Active ElectroStatic (AES) protocol, meaning the stylus is compatible with devices from the MPP-supported Microsoft Surface laptops to the AES-supported Lenovo Thinkpad series of tablets. Users can switch to different protocols easily by holding both side buttons. Unlike the previous Bamboo Ink, which required hard-to-find AAAA batteries, the Ink Plus is rechargeable via USB. Like the previous model, the Plus also has three different fine nibs (soft, medium, and firm), and has a triangular barrel which some artists find more... Cont.

Nintendo has announced the release date for its latest mobile game. Dr. Mario World will be available for iOS and Android on July 10th, with pre-registration now open on the iOS App Store and Google Play. The title was first revealed in January . A new trailer posted today gives the first real look at the game, which appears to be pretty different from other versions of Dr. Mario. Instead of managing capsules as they fall down the screen Tetris-style, Dr. Mario World sees you drag them directly onto the pre-arranged play field. The game also has typical free-to-play mobile trappings like countdown timers and multiple currencies, but a puzzle game like Dr. Mario might at least be a better fit for that sort of thing than Mario Kart, which...

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is the most trusted source of Apple rumors — once predicting that that the company would sell three different iPhones well over a year before that came true . Now, he’s betting that we’ll see the first 5G iPhones in 2020, despite the fact that Apple’s original 5G modem supplier is no longer making them anymore, according to MacRumors and 9to5Mac . You see, we’d already heard that Apple might have a 5G iPhone by 2020, but it was slated to use an Intel radio chip — something which we’ve since learned won’t be happening , because Apple chose to go with Qualcomm instead, forcing Intel to close up shop. Apple agreed to settle all its pending lawsuits with Qualcomm and spent at least $4.5 billion to secure the chipmaker’s...

Apple seemingly left one new, upcoming tvOS feature out of the company’s WWDC keynote earlier this month : picture-in-picture. 9to5Mac reports that today’s developer beta of tvOS 13 allows Apple TV users to shrink down any video playing in the Apple TV app to a corner of the screen and continue browsing through other content and menus — while still watching whatever video was originally playing. Unfortunately a public beta for tvOS 13 isn’t yet available and is expected in July. For now, picture-in-picture is said to be limited to the Apple TV app , but hopefully the same functionality comes to Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, and other popular streaming services. If nothing else, it’d allow you to start watching something “eh” and dig...

NASA’s asteroid-sampling spacecraft OSIRIS-REx just snapped its closest picture yet of Bennu , the deep-space rock it’s been hovering around since the end of last year . The high-resolution image highlights the object’s very rocky surface and even showcases a very large boulder on its southern half. OSIRIS-REx took this up-close picture on June 13th, right after the spacecraft inserted itself into orbit around Bennu for the second time. The vehicle first got into Bennu’s orbit on December 31st, 2018, flying about a mile away from the asteroid’s surface. From that path, OSIRIS-REx mapped Bennu’s surface in intricate detail, and also observed some interesting things from this vantage point, including rocks spewing from Bennu’s surface . The..

I am now being subjected to headlines like “Elon Musk ‘deletes’ Twitter account after bizarre video game fan art scandal” because apparently journalists in the Year of Our Lord Two Thousand and Nineteen can’t wrap their brains around shitposting. If you can see Elon Musk’s Twitter account, he has not deleted it. This is almost too stupid to explain. This is almost too stupid to explain, so I actually wasn’t going to bother. But Bloomberg decided to make a video out of it and Mashable ’s headline confused at least one of my coworkers into asking me if it was true. (AP’s headline is slightly better: “Elon Musk Says He Is Deleting His Twitter Account.” It would be improved thus: “Elon Musk Tweets That He Deleted His Twitter Account.”). Here... C.

The Amazon-owned game streaming platform Twitch is suing anonymous trolls who posted a slew of harmful and illegal content, including the Christchurch shooting, on the platform late last month. If the company learns the identities of these people, they plan to request the court to prohibit them from using the platform and force them to pay damages, as first reported by Bloomberg . The videos were posted last month by an organized group of trolls in Twitch’s Artifact category , who are named in the lawsuit as John and Jane Does 1-100 . Aside from the video filmed by the Christchurch shooter , trolls also streamed porn, copyrighted movies and television shows, and other illegal and harmful content. “Over the weekend of May 25, we became... As part of the shutdown of Telltale Games, support for Minecraft: Story Mode is set to end on June 25th . But due to some weirdness with how the Xbox Live store works on the Xbox 360 specifically, the company had to re-add the episodes to the store for a whopping $99.99 each , in order to allow players who already own the game to re-download their content before it’s removed for good, via Polygon . Obviously, that price is way beyond the $4.99 price each episode originally ran for, but $100 per episode here. As the Minecraft: Story Mode Facebook account explains , “The price shown is a real list price, please do not buy the content, if you do, you will be charged the amount shown. This is simply the only mechanism available to facilitate...

Microsoft removed Huawei’s laptop lineup from its online store last month, following a new executive order to crack down on the Chinese tech company. While the software giant has remained silent over whether Huawei will still be able to obtain Windows licenses for its range of laptops, the devices are now starting to return to online stores this week. Twitter user WalkingCat noticed that Huawei’s laptops have returned, and we’ve spotted that the MateBook 13 , the MateBook , and the MateBook X Pro are all available once again. The MateBook X Pro is currently listed as “out of stock,” but the rest are available to purchase again. Photo by Dan Seifert / The Verge. Huawei’s latest laptops. The Verge reached out to... New York, a longtime holdout in the dockless electric scooter boom, appears poised to finally allow scooter-sharing companies like Bird and Lime to operate on its roads. Lawmakers in the state capital of Albany have reached a deal to lift the ban on throttle-based scooters and bikes, and if Governor Andrew Cuomo signs off, New Yorkers may soon see the electric-powered vehicles zipping down their streets in droves. The bill would change state law to legalize e-bikes and scooters, but would require cities to opt in and would give localities the opportunity to decide for themselves how to regulate the vehicles. This would appear to satisfy some lawmakers who opposed legalizing scooters for reasons of safety and sidewalk obstruction. L... Conti.

In a case closely watched for its potential implications for social media, the Supreme Court has ruled that a nonprofit running public access channels isn’t bound by governmental constraints on speech. The case, which the conservative wing of the court decided in a split 5–4 ruling, centered around a Manhattan-based nonprofit tasked by New York City with operating public access channels in the area.

Spotify announced today that advertisers can now target ads based on the podcasts that people listen to. This means that unlike before, where advertisers could mainly target Spotify’s free-tier listeners by the music they enjoy — by genre or playlist — they can now target based on the category of podcast they consume, which is likely going to be much more specific and fruitful for the advertisers. Today’s news is likely only the start of how Spotify plans to eventually leverage its growing podcast features to make its ads more valuable and generate more revenue. In a statement to The Verge , a Spotify spokeswoman explained that the company wants to keep building out advertising around podcasts. She said, “We aspire to develop a more... Cont.

Most political press conferences can be sort of a bore, but during last week’s live-streamed presser by Pakistani regional minister Shaukat Yousafzai, the event attracted international attention for all the wrong reasons. While Yousafzai addressed the public in his weekly conference, a volunteer on the team accidentally activated the cat filter on Facebook Live, causing the minister to appear with digital cat eats, whiskers, and rosy cheeks. Father’s Day 2019 has passed, but some great deals that we saw last week are still happening. For example, you can save $200 on a Samsung Galaxy S10E , S10 , or S10 Plus , the lowest prices that we’ve seen for these phones, which are unlocked and don’t require activation. The Google Pixel 3 XL with $300 knocked off of its price ($599.99 at checkout) isn’t too bad, either, though it’s a harder sell since the Google Pixel 4 has been revealed — by Google itself. It’s not just phones that you can save on, Microsoft’s Xbox One consoles are cheaper than usual this week, discounting both its powerful, 4K-ready Xbox One X and the disc drive-less Xbox One S All-Digital console. If you preorder a game at Target, you can save 30 percent on a game... C.
