Preventing infectious disease transmission among health care workers and patients is a critical component of safe health care delivery in all settings. CDC recently updated four sections of its 1998 guideline for infection control in health care personnel: Infection Control Objectives for a Personnel Health Service, Elements of a Personnel Health Service for Infection Control, Emergency-Response Personnel, and the Americans with Disabilities Act. CDC noted that recommendations in other sections of the 1998 guideline are current.

A controlled substance prescription must be issued for a legitimate medical purpose and in the usual course of professional practice. Any order for a controlled substance that does not meet these legal criteria is referred to as a “purported prescription,” and a pharmacist who knowingly honors such a purported prescription has committed a federal offense.

Proposed revisions to USP General Chapters <795> and <797>, which establish standards for nonsterile and sterile compounding, respectively, raised the ire of compounding pharmacists because of their stringent rules around beyond-use dates (BUDs). In response, the USP Compounding Expert Committee considered appeals by pharmacists and the professional associations that represent them and issued decisions; however, stakeholders who submitted appeals requested further review by a panel with members appointed by USP.

When we think of team-based care, the first thing that comes to mind is often a multidisciplinary provider team. While it is absolutely true that pharmacists partnering with prescribers and other health professionals is a key to quality patient care, this month’s Pharmacy Today cover story (page 20) highlights a different type of collaboration. After a large network of pain clinics closed in upstate South Carolina, the pharmacist–patient team met the urgent needs of 20,000 patients who were left abruptly without providers.

We’re a deeply divided nation. The upcoming elections mean that things will likely get more difficult before they get better.

Headache is one of the most common complaints worldwide, with a substantial economic impact. Headaches resulting from tension (stress), diagnosed migraine, sinus, and analgesic overuse are the most common and amenable to self-treatment. Headaches generally are classified as primary or secondary. Approximately 90% are primary, meaning they are not associated with an underlying illness.

According to updated recommendations from CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), patients and vaccine providers, including pharmacists, should engage in shared clinical decision making when considering pneumococcal conjugate vaccination (PCV13) in persons aged 65 years and older who do not have an immunocompromising condition, cerebrospinal fluid leak, or cochlear implant and who have not previously received PCV13.

California became the first state to authorize pharmacists to dispense HIV prevention medications, including both pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and postexposure prophylaxis (PEP), without a physician’s prescription. The groundbreaking legislation was made official on October 7 after Gov. Gavin Newsom signed SB 159 into law.
