NEW DELHI ― At least two people working at India’s foreign affairs ministry have tested positive for COVID-19, and the government has asked several officials to self quarantine as a precaution, according to a source and internal e-mails seen by Reuters. One person who tested positive worked as a consultant in the ministry’s Central Europe division in New Delhi, while the other worked as a legal officer in the law division, the e-mails stated. “As per protocol, all members of the CE Division have been asked to go for self quarantine for 14 days and work from home,” the ministry advised in an internal e-mail on May 27, which was reviewed by Reuters. NEW DELHI ― India’s economy grew at 3.1% in the January-March quarter, its slowest pace in at least eight years, and the situation is expected to worsen rapidly, putting pressure on the government and central bank for additional stimulus and a rate cut. The central bank and rating agencies have warned the worst is yet to come for the economy as the impact of more than two months of COVID-19 lockdown unfolds. Private economists have predicted a contraction of more than 20% in the April-June quarter and a contraction of up to 5% in the fiscal year that began in April. Direct fiscal stimulus measures announced this month, mainly to provide subsidised credit and grain to small businesses and migrant workers, are estimated at around 1% of the GD.

On the night the government announced that there was to be no mobility, no socializing, no venturing out at all, I had already been a severely anxious and depressed wreck for weeks. I cried after a neighbour casually accused me of hoarding rations when she saw the two small grocery bags I was carrying home. I had stepped out in a panic after the announcement of a nationwide lockdown to buy butter, eggs, bread, vegetables and dustbin liners. I wondered if my neighbour was right, if I had done something terrible in my anxiety. The woman’s words compounded the fear I felt, and I frantically counted the supplies I had purchased – two 100-gram slabs of butter, one of everything else.
