Visitors to Dreamworld can now get up close and personal with tiger cubs in Tiger Island. The two resident tiger cubs – Javi and Zakari – are now seven weeks old and have had their necessary vaccinations, permitting them to socialise with guests. The cubs are ambassadors for wild tigers, and a portion of every Tiger Cub Experience will go towards the Dreamworld Wildlife Foundation.

Hospitality giant Accor has announced five new general manager appointments across Australia. These include Joshua Lusty, who will head up ibis Budget Wentworthville; Maria Seroukas, who has made the move from Mantra St Kilda Road to Mantra Central City; Alison Baker, who will lead BreakFree Adelaide; former operations manager at Fraser Suites Sydney Tate Manduku, who will head up BreakFree on George; and Cameron Baker, who will take the reins at Mantra Lorne.

ONYX Hospitality Group has announced the opening of its newest hotel, OZO Phuket. The 225-room hotel is situated in Kata town, within walking distance of shops, the night market at Kata beach. The hotel also boasts an onsite restaurant, EAT, which serves an all-day a la carte menu consisting of Thai, Asian and international cuisine. To celebrate the opening, OZO Phuket is offering an introductory rate of AUD $90 per room per night.

Slated to open at the end of this year is The Silveri Hong Kong – MGallery, the MGallery brand’s first hotel in Hong Kong. The property’s name references the silver mine resources in east Lantau, and silver will drive the design. The Silveri Hong Kong – MGallery will feature 206 guest rooms, a leafy arrival hall, three dining options, an executive lounge and two meeting rooms. More than 40 new MGallery projects are currently in the pipeline, with half located in the Asia Pacific.

Seasoned hotel professional Hannes Bos has been appointed as Radisson Hotel Group vice President, Commercial, Asia Pacific. Hannes has held senior management positions with Concorde Hotels in Paris and Millennium & Copthorne in London and Singapore, and joined IHG in 2008 as director of revenue management for the Middle East and Africa. Hannes has been brought on board as the company continues to implement its Destination 2022 five-year transformation strategy.

Cloud-based venue software company EventBooking has expanded its team to operate from Australia and better serve the Asia Pacific region. This is the result of a recent addition to the team, Melanie Taylor, who has been appointed as the Asia Pacific sales director. President of EventBooking Steve Mackenzie said it was the right time to have a local team member in the region given the number of local venues that use EventBooking’s latest venue management application, VenueOps.

Following a multi-million dollar rejuvenation project, Accor has re-opened Tahiti Ia Ora Beach Resort by Sofitel’s luxury overwater bungalows. Each of the 12 bungalows epitomise a Tahitian getaway, and are replete with glass panel floors, dried wooden trunks for bedside tables and luminaries inspired by traditional fish traps. The bungalows also include a private terrace with deckchairs from which Tahitian sunsets can be observed. Two restaurants, two bars, free WiFi meeting rooms and a sand-bottom pool are also located onsite.

Auckland has secured the bid for the 34th International Congress for School Effectiveness and Improvement (ICSEI), which will be hosted by The University of Auckland, in partnership with the Ministry of Education, from January 21–24, 2021. The conference is expected to attract more than 500 delegates from around the world, staying six visitor nights each and contributing an estimated $645,800 in tourism spend to Auckland.

As was announced at IMEX Frankfurt this week, Te Pae convention centre in Christchurch is 50 per cent complete and on track for an October 2020 opening. Te Pae GM Ross Steele said that all of the structural steel elements are in place, the roofing and façade are being applied and the 1400 seat auditorium is taking shape. The venue has already secured a slew of international and national conventions, such as the 2021 International Education Conference.

Jackie has more than 30 years’ experience in the business events industry, having commenced her career as a conference and event coordinator at ICMS Australasia. Jackie also worked as the BDM AU/NZ for the Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau. Over the next six months, New Caledonia Tourism in Australia will revamp its website, increase its offers for incentive groups and launch a B2B advertising campaign.

Some of Philip’s previous stints include strategic account manager at Travelport and head of partnerships at Hotelbeds. One of The Star Gold Coast’s restaurants, Nineteen at the Star, has been taken over by the next generation of chefs, who will prepare an exclusive six-course feast for a line-up of guests. The group of 13 apprentices, who are currently studying at The Star Culinary Institute, will showcase their culinary prowess to the minister for employment and small business, the minister for training and skills development and executives from the tourism sector. The young’uns have been given autonomy over the menu.

Australia’s first Element by Westin hotel, Element Melbourne Richmond, will open its doors on June 12. Located in Richmond’s Botanicca Corporate Park, the 168-room hotel has been designed with healthy and active traveller in mind, with a nature-inspired and eco-conscious design philosophy. Each of the hotel’s guest rooms feature floor-to-ceiling windows, spa-inspired bathrooms and high-speed WiFi. For MICE activities, the hotel includes 256 square metres of function space.

The 2024 International Orthoptic Association Congress will take place in Brisbane, following a successful bid by the city. Orthopists are eye health professionals who play an integral role in the assessment, diagnosis, management and rehabilitation of eye and vision disorders across the human lifespan. Professionals from more than 23 countries are expected to congregate to drive eye improvements across Australia and the Asia Pacific region. BCEC general manager Bob O’Keeffe said the centre was honoured to bring the congress to Brisbane.

The hotly anticipated conference and events centre planned for Melbourne and Olympic Parks (M&OP) will be showcased at IMEX Frankfurt this month. The venue has also announced that it has embarked on stage three of its multi-million-dollar redevelopment, unveiling major demolition work on existing structures to pave the way for the development. Upon completion, the centre will offer a 2000 sqm pillar-less ballroom and an 800 sqm pre-function area. The centre is scheduled for completion in 2022, and is now open for bookings.
