The FDA has requested that Eisai withdraw its weight loss drug Belviq (lorcaserin) and Belviq XR from the US market after clinical trial data indicated that those receiving the drug exhibited an increased incidence of cancer. The coronavirus outbreak reached its deadliest day since it began in December. Roughly 242 deaths have been reported in Hubei province on Wednesday. This is partly due to the region starting to use a broader definition to diagnose people, but this is only being used in Hubei so far. This new definition includes those showing symptoms, and having a CT scan showing an infected lung, rather than relying only on the standard nucleic acid tests. Of the new 242 deaths, 135 of these clinically diagnosed cases.

Researchers at the Institute of Cancer Research have discovered that a small RNA molecule known as microRNA gene MIR1249 contributes to the chemotherapy-resistant nature of some bile duct tumours, potentially paving the way for more effective cancer-fighting drugs. The body’s WNT signalling network is partly responsible for the regulation of stem cells, but the MIR1249 gene is able, according to the researchers, to "rewire" this network, enabling cancer cells to co-opt the resilient, self-regenerating properties of stem cells, allowing them to survive bouts of chemotherapy.
