About 300,000 smallholder farmers in the northern parts of the country are to receive improved certified seeds within the next two years to help increase their crop yields and incomes. The assistance from the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) is to support the National Seed Trade Association of Ghana (NASTAG) under the “Strengthening the Ghana Seed System to Enhance Quality Seed Delivery to Farmers” project. The $376,801.76 project, which runs between October 2020 and September 2022 is aimed at improving food and nutrition security and the incomes of smallholder farmers.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has approved the Indiana State Hemp Plan for commercially growing and processing hemp. In Indiana, hemp processing and production are regulated through the Office of the Indiana State Chemist (OISC). The approved hemp plan takes OISC’s pilot hemp program and transitions it to a commercial hemp production program. Previously, hemp growers needed a research proposal and to be associated with a university researcher to apply for a license. Under this newly approved plan, farmers will not need a research component to be licensed.

Left behind after summer’s harvest, corn’s bulky stalks, rustling leaves, husks, and silks offer few uses beyond low-quality livestock feed, or being plowed back into the soil. Researchers at Washington State University are part of a national effort to find a higher-value use for such leftovers. The waste, also known as corn stover, is a plentiful source of lignin, a structural molecule used to make advanced jet fuels. Bin Yang, associate professor in WSU’s Department of Biological Systems Engineering, is helping to launch a new $3.7 million, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)-funded project, led by researchers at the University of North Dakota. The team will design, build, and test a lignin-based pilot reactor, for the first time studying the.

Numerous examples of biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) have been discovered in plant genomes, but little is known about the formation of these important examples of gene organization. They are of interest because many of BGCs reported in plants in recent years encode compounds of agricultural importance – conferring disease resistance and drought tolerance. Investigating this genome architecture is crucial to our understanding of the relationship between genome organization and the evolution of complex adaptive traits. John Innes Centre researchers in the Osbourn group took advantage of recent advances in sequence data for Arabidopsis thaliana and its relatives in a study which sheds light on the occurrence, nature and evolution of plant BG.

A national chickpea breeding program would be launched from the NSW Department of Primary Industries Tamworth Agricultural Institute under a $30 million plan to boost production and exports, Minister for Agriculture Adam Marshall announced. Marshall said the Chickpea Breeding Australia (CBA) program would be a 5-year partnership between the NSW Government and the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC).

Perennial crops need not be planted every year, have roots that grow deeper in the soil and other advantages over annual crops. However, progress has been comparatively slow in terms of unlocking the evolutionary and eco-physiological bottlenecks that limit the yield potential and therefore broader adoption of such crops. The “Unlocking the Biological Potential of Perennial Grain Crops for Sustainable Agriculture: Advances and Challenges” symposium at the Translating Visionary Science to Practice ASA, CSSA, SSSA International Annual Meeting will address these topics.

As a uniquely nutritious food source, soybeans have a significant and growing impact on the planet. But only a small fraction of soybean production complies with voluntary sustainability standards (VSSs) that could address some of the sector’s critical environmental and social challenges, according to a new report from the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD).

More than two billion people worldwide suffer from micronutrient malnutrition due to deficiencies in minerals and vitamins. People in developing countries are most affected, as their diets are typically dominated by starchy staple foods, which are inexpensive sources of calories but contain low amounts of micronutrients. In a perspective paper, “Multiplying the efficiency and impact of biofortification through metabolic engineering,” recently published in Nature Communications, an international team of scientists, led by Ghent University, explain how plant genetic engineering can help to sustainably address micronutrient malnutrition.

Feed, especially during the wintertime, is the biggest cost of production for cow-calf operations. Therefore, we often see the cull cow market dive at this time of the year as producers haul open cows to the sale barn rather than feeding them for another year without a return. Historically, we see cull cow prices hold value from February to August, and then drop from October through December.
