Abstract. Objective. The present study summarizes the current knowledge on the role of bacterial extracellular signaling systems, known as quorum sensing (QS), in oral biofilm formation, and on the possibility of blocking these microbial communication systems as a potential approach to prevent and treat oral infectious diseases. Methods. A detailed literature review of the current knowledge of QS in the oral cavity was performed, using the databases MEDLINE (through PubMed) and Web of Science. Results. Abstract. Objectives. To investigate whether serum amylase can predict the recovery of salivary volume and determine the correlation of the level of cytokines, including epidermal growth factor, hepatocyte growth factor, and keratinocyte growth factor, with oral mucositis during chemoradiotherapy for oral cancer. Abstract. Objective. Whether oral health care during the perioperative period can lead to a better outcome after heart valve surgery has not been adequately elucidated. We examined the effects of perioperative oral care on postoperative inflammation response in patients who underwent heart valve surgery. Materials and Methods. In this retrospective cohort study, 223 patients scheduled for single valve heart surgery were divided into the oral care, who underwent professional teeth cleaning or scaling within 3 days prior to surgery, and also following surgery at least twice a week (n=111), and non‐oral care (n=112) groups. After propensity score‐matching, records of both groups (80:80) were examined after surgery to evaluate inflammation markers.

Abstract. Objectives. Due to a worldwide increase of drug consumption, oral healthcare professionals are frequently confronted with patients using one or more drugs. A large number of drugs can be accompanied with adverse drug reactions in the orofacial region, amongst others of the tongue. This paper aims to give an overview of drugs that are known to be accompanied with tongue disorders. Materials and methods. ABSTRACT. Objective. Head and neck cancer survivors have increased risk of developing second primary tumors compared to overall population. Because second primary represent a major cause of morbidity and mortality in this population, early detection is fundamental. Materials and methods. In this 10‐years single‐institution study we investigated: incidence, clinical‐pathological risk factors and survival of patients with second primary tumor. We included all patients with diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck seen at the Modena University Hospital from 2008 to 2018. Results. To explore the role of CD10 in cisplatin‐resistance of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and its association with the Hedgehog (Hh) signaling pathway and cancer stem cells (CSCs). Methods.
