(Telecompaper) O2 UK has switched on its 5G mobile network in Belfast, Cardiff, London, Edinburgh, Leeds and Slough. The network will be extended to reach a total of 20 towns and cities by end-2019 and to 50 by summer 2020. O2 is launching 5G on its Custom Plans, with unlimited data at the same price as its 4G equivalents. The 5G network infrastructure is being rolled out with Ericsson and Nokia.

(Telecompaper) Huawei's Nova 5T smartphone is set to launch soon in Europe, coming next month to the UK from GBP 399, Mobile News reported. The phone, equipped with five AI cameras and sporting an array of iridescent colours, will also come with full Google services, with Android 9 Pie OS. No official launch data has been given but the phone will in the UK be available at EE, Vodafone, O2 UK, Carphone Warehouse, Argos, Amazon, John Lewis and Shops Direct.

(Telecompaper) Apple has launched its own internal studio, headed by Apple Worldwide Video chiefs Zack Van Amburg and Jamie Erlicht, Hollywood Reporter reported. The studio, still unnamed, will make content specifically for Apple, starting with "Masters of the Air", a follow up to the World War II series by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. The first two dramas in the series were from HBO: "Band of Brothers" and "The Pacific." The new series will see the return of Spielberg and Hanks as executive producers.

(Telecompaper) Facebook's currency project Libra has suffered more setbacks, the Verge reported. Following the departure of PayPal from the Libra Association in early October, Visa, Mastercard, Stripe and Mercado Pago plus eBay all followed suite on 11 October. The moves mean that every major US payment processor has pulled out. The remaining payment processor, PayU, has not yet provided any comment. Remaining associations include Lyft and Vodafone, and consist mainly of venture capital, telecom, blockchain and tech companies, as well as non-profits.

(Telecompaper) Last week saw Cellnex agree a major takeover, while Vodafone kicked off a cost savings program and KPN potentially made a big shift in its commercial strategy. Overall, the European telecoms services sector performed well, as per our related index, which was up 2.1 percent in week 41. Still, this was significantly behind the EuroStoxx 50's sharp 3.6 percent rise. Forthnet (+16%) and Go Internet (-9.8%) were the micro cap outliers. BT's gain of 12 percent was the biggest large cap leap.

(Telecompaper) AT&T has agreed to sell its operations in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands to Liberty Latin America for USD 1.95 billion in cash, confirming earlier reports. In a statement, the US operator said it expects the deal to close within 6 to 9 months following review by the FCC and the Department of Justice. It added that the sale includes network assets, leases and real estate, 1.1 million mobile subscribers and contracts. A total of 1,300 current AT&T employees will move over to Liberty Latin America at the close of the deal.

(Telecompaper) Oracle is planning an "aggressive" push into the cloud, with plans to hire almost 2,000 new employees and to invest in more real estate to support that new workforce. The new employees will boost the company's Oracle Cloud Infrastructure operations. The new roles will include software development, cloud operations, and business operations and help Oracle roll out new product innovations and expand to new cloud regions.

(Telecompaper) Vodafone wants to eliminate 15 percent of its 7,700 European stores, Reuters reported, citing chief executive Nick Read. Store opening will continue however in the UK. But for Europe in general, Read noted that people are just buying more online and that those who do go to shops have different expectations. As a result, the company will upgrade some of its remaining shops. Data will be used to see what customers want in each location. About 40 percent should be transformed by the end of 2021.

(Telecompaper) Spanish operator Telefonica is negotiating an agreement with its two main rivals in the Brazilian market, America Movil and TIM, to jointly purchase the assets of Oi, sources close to the process told Spanish daily Expansion. The idea is to jointly buy the Brazilian operator and then distribute the assets. Telefonica may also try to reach an agreement only with TIM, since the advantages of the purchase for both are greater than in the case of America Movil, which recently acquired Nextel Brasil and its frequency spectrum.

(Telecompaper) Apple has announced that macOS Catalina, its new desktop operating system for Macintosh computers, is now available worldwide. First unveiled at the company's Worldwide Developers Conference earlier this year, the free upgrade includes features such as Sidecar to enable the use of an iPad as a secondary screen or drawing tablet, all-new Mac versions of Apple Music, Apple TV and Apple Podcasts that replace the discontinued iTunes software, full voice control capabilities and Mac Catalyst, a new technology that makes it easy for third-party developers to bring iPad apps to the Mac environment.

The Kindle Kids Edition, has a battery that last weeks, access to thousands of e-books with Amazon FreeTime Unlimited and a two-year guarantee. It will cost USD 109.99.
