Back in May, Judge Lucy Koh ruled against chipmaker Qualcomm and in favor of the Federal Trade Commission in a non-jury trial. Koh's ruling demanded that Qualcomm change the way it sells chips to phone manufacturers and renegotiate its contracts with them. The trial was heard over a ten-day period in January and Judge Koh heard from Apple and other companies about Qualcomm's business practices. These include the outfit's "No license, no chips" policy, royalties computed using the retail price of a phone, and Qualcomm's refusal to license its standard-essential patents to rivals. These are ...

Getting a smartphone for free from US carriers is easy enough if you're not looking for an Apple iPhone. It seems easier for Apple fans to get an older iPhone for free rather than a new model, but that involves agreeing to a long-term contract in many cases. If you don't mind that, Verizon has a great deal on the iPhone 7, which usually sells for $445 outright. It looks like you can get one for free on Verizon's 24 months Device Plan, down from $18.74 per month. You can even choose between four colors – Silver, Gold, Rose Gold, and Black, as the Jet Black looks like it's out of stock. ...

The YouTube Music app is far from being perfect, but what's really frustrating is that many of the features that could bring it closer to being great are not that hard to implement. Take the sorting option for example, which was lacking from the YouTube Music app since launch. Well, at least that one issue was solved recently, as 9to5Google reports YouTube Music has finally been updated with the long-awaited sorting option, which will allow users to sort playlists and albums by alphabetical order or reverse alphabetical order. By default, the sorting option is set to Recently added, but ...

What do you do when your Apple iPhone is possessed? No, not repossessed, just possessed. According to a Reddit post written by someone with the handle "NotRealUserNameHomie," he and his wife have been experiencing something creepy with both of their iPhone XS handsets. Over the past few nights, both phones start flashing light between the hours of 3:00 am and 4:30 am. A security camera inside the house captured the strange activity. The phones were purchased from Verizon a few weeks ago, and are said to be completely up to date software-wise. Some Redditors came up ...

Now that the Galaxy Note 10 and 10+ are available on the market, we expect Samsung's previous Note series flagships to become cheaper. The last year model was priced to sell for $1,000, but these days you can get one for less than $800. Assuming you can't afford Samsung's new Galaxy Note 10 phones, the Note 9 should be your next obvious choice, although its price hasn't dropped too low yet. It looks like Amazon is running a promotion on the Galaxy Note 9, but there are some quirks to it. First off, it's the Lavander Purple version that's getting the biggest discount – $275 or 27%. ...

The LG Stylo 5 made its debut in the US back in June, but only two carriers, Cricket and Boost Mobile offered the smartphone for a time. Sprint was the first major network operator to sell the phablet back in July, but T-Mobile picked it up as well a month later. Today, Verizon has quietly added the mid-end smartphone to its roster, although the Big Red will sell it under a slightly different name – LG Stylo 5v. Apart from the name, there are no differences between Verizon's model and those from the other US carriers. Verizon is asking $240 for the LG Stylo 5v, but customers can buy ...

Late last month, a leaked image tipped us off to Verizon's pre-order deal for the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ 5G. Buy one using the carrier's Device Payment plan, add a new smartphone line for an Unlimited plan, and you'll get a credit of $949.99 in the form of 24 monthly bill credits in the amount of $39.58 each. That is just enough to get a free Samsung Galaxy Note 10. Or, you can take the monthly bill credits and reduce the cost of a Galaxy Note 10+ to 24 monthly payments of $6.25 or $150. It is a great deal for either phone, but you are NOT exactly getting a Galaxy ...

Shares of Apple plunged nearly $10 or 4.62% today after U.S. President Donald Trump disseminated a tweet "ordering" U.S. companies to stop doing business in China. While the president is not a dictator and cannot just tweet such an order, the fear is that he will do something within the powers of the president and force U.S. companies to pull out of the country. Apple designs its products in the U.S. but assembles them mostly in China. CNBC is now reporting that the president has raised tariffs on $250 billion worth of Chinese imports to 30% from 25% starting ...

Apple's wearables unit was its fastest-growing division during the company's fiscal third-quarter which covered April through June. Revenue attributed to wearables rose 48.3% year-over-year to $5.53 billion. The product that is driving such growth is the Apple Watch; the smartwatch has not only established itself as a tool for measuring a user's physical activities, it has also gained notoriety as a health-related device that will monitor a person's heart rate and heart rhythms (with the electrocardiogram feature found on the Apple Watch Series 4). Reliable TF ...

Just days after LG Innotek reportedly started up production of camera modules for the 2019 iPhone models, a report from Korea's JoongAng Ilbo (via Seeking Alpha) states that LG Display has started production of OLED panels for the new phones. This is the first time that the company will deliver this part for the iPhone, and it will be responsible for 10% (6 million to 7 million panels) of Apple's needs for the new models expected to be unveiled on September 10th. “Out with the old, in with the new” is what people often say. But if you’re already a proud owner of the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, should you upgrade as soon as possible to the newer Galaxy Note 10+? There’s lots to consider here, so let’s explore! Design From a design standpoint, the new Galaxy Note 10+ is a big step ahead of the Note 9. While the latter mostly put function over form and relied on clean, utilitarian aesthetics and conservative colors, the Note 10+ takes a much more aggressive and expressive approach in the design department. With the new ...

The cord-cutting trend, and the runaway success that Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and other streamers that produce original content have become, didn't go unnoticed at Apple. The rumors that it is circling the wagons to try and launch a streaming package mix of shows and popular channels like HBO or Showtime materialized as TV+, Apple's first foray into a new industry in a good while. A recent TV+ pricing rumor dovetails with previous speculation that the team from Cupertino will launch its shows as a standalone subscription that may undercut Netflix prices. The standard Netflix ...

Apple users have always had the benefit of a unified ecosystem and continuity between their iPhones and Mac computers. Android users haven't been as lucky, though in recent years Samsung has started paying greater attention to the connectivity between smartphones and computers. Starting with Samsung Flow in 2017, Galaxy phone users could wirelessly link their devices to Windows, allowing them to view notifications, reply to messages, take advantage of a universal clipboard, and even project their phone's screen on the computer for direct access. But Samsung and Microsoft are ...

Right around 2017 a perfect storm of events both raised average phone prices, and made them visible for the consumer. The carrier subsidies system removal, general industry cool-off, and ever-increasing competition that made companies chase expensive components all contributed to the phenomenon. Nobody asked for the iPhone X Face ID biometry that needed a notch cutout in an OLED display yet Apple decided to set itself apart with it. Phones then started chasing hole-in-display, sliding, dual-screen, pop-up and other "all-screen" design efforts. In-display fingerprint readers ...
