10 Apr 2020 --- A newly launched innovative snack brand Goodfish is embracing organic palm oil and has become Palm Done Right’s latest brand partner. The fried wild-caught Alaskan Sockeye salmon skins are marketed as a “brain and body snack” packed with “good fats” (omega 3), clean protein (full branched-chain amino acids), marine collagen, and zero-carbs. The company has recently backed its environmental commitment to using sustainably sourced organic palm oil, through this new partnership.

10 Apr 2020 --- Ingredion is to acquire a controlling 75 percent stake in PureCircle, a US-based manufacturer of “next-generation” stevia leaf ingredients. Sugar reduction is part of Ingredion’s growth strategy, with the ingredients supplier pegging stevia as a core product. PureCircle has a proven track record for producing plant-based stevia, while this is Ingredion’s second significant announcement this week, closely following its plans to build an in China designed to more than double its current capacity.

10 Apr 2020 --- To better inform consumers on environmentally sustainable food choices, alternative meat brand Quorn Foods is now listing its carbon footprint data for 60 percent of its product volume on the back of its packaging. Certified by the Carbon Trust, Quorn’s “Farm to Shop” carbon footprint data will be available for its top 30 selling products. The company notes that “the new decade requires more focus on how food choices can impact climate change.”

Published in the journal Scientific Reports , researchers report “a great deal of variation between years” – suggesting that environmental conditions such as rain or drought also affect nutritional quality, but that this is small when compared to the effect of the variety. 07 Apr 2020 --- Biotech company Biocatalysts has launched an animal-free alternative to pancreatic lipase, a porcine enzyme widely used in a number of food processes. The new enzyme, called Lipomod 888MDP, is a non-genetically modified microbial lipase preparation which is both Kosher and Halal. While the ingredient is not “plant-based” as such, it is made from a fungal preparation, tapping into vegetarian and vegan trends. The development of the microbial alternative comes in the wake of African swine fever (ASF).
