The spread of cryptocurrencies such as Facebook’s Libra could have serious repercussions for worldwide efforts to detect and stamp out money laundering and terror financing, a global watchdog on illicit finance said on Friday. “Stablecoins” - digital currencies typically backed by traditional money - could spark the mass adoption of cryptocurrencies and peer-to-peer transfers, cutting out the need for regulated middlemen and hindering efforts to halt criminal use, the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) said. Mumbai: The forex kitty continued to climb north, swelling by USD 1.879 billion to a new life-time high of USD 439.712 billion, in the week to October 11, the Reserve Bank said on Friday. The forex reserves had increased by a higher USD 4.24 billion to a new high of USD 437.83 billion in the previous reporting week. For the week under review, the foreign currency assets, which are the biggest part of the reserves, increased by USD 2.269 billion to USD 407.88 billion, the RBI said. Expressed in US dollar terms, the foreign currency assets include the effect of appreciation or depreciation of non-US units like the euro, pound and the yen held in the foreign exchange reserves. The value of the gold reserves dipped by USD 399 million to USD 26.

Mumbai: SBI's head Rajnish Kumar has been elected as the chairman of the banking industry lobby Indian Banks Association for fiscal 2019-20. The body, which represents banks' interests with the government and regulators, said it has three top bankers from various lenders as its deputy chairmen. Kolkata: Thomas Cook India Ltd (TCIL) has taken a strategy of "wait and watch" on the use of brand, as the travel and leisure company is striving to clear the air that the financial collapse of the iconic British firm, Thomas Cook PLC, has no bearing on it, a company official said on Friday. TCIL will weigh whether the development relating to the UK-based firm has any negative perception on the brand- Thomas Cook, the official said. TCIL is a completely different entity owned by Canada-based Fairfax Financial Holdings but it has the right to use the brand for only India and Hong Kong markets, the company official said.
