Community was a very different show by the time it ended — but still a terrific one. | Sony Pictures Television. Across six seasons and two networks, the terrifically funny series took on nearly every genre and pop culture trope. In Watch This , Vox critic at large Emily VanDerWerff tells you what she’s watching on TV — and why you should watch it too. . This week: the classic sitcom Community , which debuted 10 years ago on September 17, 2009. Watch all six seasons . Few TV shows have changed my life like has. That sounds like hyperbole, I realize, but it’s really not. The sitcom about a group of study buddies at a community college, which very quickly became a free-wheeling parody of nearly all pop culture, was one of my favorite shows of

A new release from OpenAI shows how complex behavior emerges. This week, leading AI lab OpenAI released their : an AI that can play hide-and-seek. It’s the latest example of how, with current machine learning techniques, a very simple setup can produce shockingly sophisticated results. The AI agents play a very simple version of the game, where the “seekers” get points whenever the “hiders” are in their field of view . The “hiders” get a little time at the start to set up a hiding place and get points when they’ve successfully hidden themselves; both sides can move objects around the playing field (like blocks, walls, and ramps) for an advantage. The results from this simple setup were quite impressive. Over the course of 481 million games

President Barack Obama stands with his 2010 economic team. | Mark Wilson/Getty Images. Congress, not neoliberalism, hamstrung Obama’s presidency. What are we talking about when we talk about neoliberalism? In its simplest form, neoliberalism refers to a general preference for market mechanisms over state interventions. But since almost everyone sometimes prefers market mechanisms to state interventions, and sometimes prefer state interventions to market mechanisms, the conversation quickly gets confusing. Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher . Bill Clinton is as a neoliberal. Barack Obama is a neoliberal. Elizabeth Warren is a neoliberal. A label that can describe everyone doesn’t usefully describe anyone. In recent years, neoliberal has reem.

The SVU team in season 17's “Intersecting Lives.” |. The show, which turns 20 this year, started off extremely tough on crime — but has recently learned the value of forgiveness. On Wednesday, March 30, 2016, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit did something extraordinary: It asked viewers to empathize with an admitted rapist. SVU , which marks its 20th anniversary this Friday, is not a subtle show. For those who haven’t watched, it’s a pulpy cop procedural with a penchant for over-the-top, almost self-parodically implausible plot twists. Its focus on sex crimes can be both empowering (it puts a huge emphasis on believing women) and frustrating in its sensationalistic focus on the grisliest details of sexual violence (as in an arc involving a

Then it wasn’t. Now . , , and are listening too, but it’s not all as pernicious as it sounds. Facebook this week that it collects and stores audio from its smart speaker, Portal, when users awaken the device by saying, “Hey Portal.” Contractors may later transcribe a small portion of the ensuing dialogue to help train Portal’s algorithms so it can come up with better responses in the future. (Facebook now says it will give users the option to turn off human audio transcription.). Still, people are concerned and confused about the possibility that their de.

That stereotypical Western backdrop isn’t typical of the West. Towering red rock formations and big blue sky make up the stereotypical backdrop of the American West. But the rocks we see in so many movies aren’t typical of the area at all. In fact, they are unique to one place: Monument Valley. Wikimedia Commons. West Mitten Butte (left) East Mitten Butte (center) and Merrick Butte (right), Monument Valley. Monument Valley is on the Utah-Arizona border inside the Navajo Nation Reservation, and until the 20th century, it had barely been visited by non-indigenous people. But when Harry Goulding, a sheep trader who had settled there in the early 1920s, brought photos of the unique landscape to Hollywood, that changed. Director John Ford brought.

Judge Lawrence Flood speaks during a hearing at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse on September 17, 2019 in Chicago, Illinois. | Antonio Perez/Getty Images. The FAIR Act would ban forced arbitration. That’s a big deal. The House just passed a groundbreaking bill that would restore legal rights to millions of American workers and consumers. Lawmakers voted 225-186 Friday to pass the , a far-reaching bill that bans companies from requiring workers and consumers to resolve legal disputes in private arbitration — a quasi-legal forum with no judge, no jury, and practically no government oversight. These clauses, which are common in employment and consumer contracts, have made it impossible for workers to sue their bosses in court for sexual harassm.

Jon Ragel/NBC/NBCU Photo Bank via Getty Images. Was Friends homophobic and way too white? Yes. But arguing about the show is healthy. Everyone loves a pop-culture anniversary, but this particular milestone is being celebrated with everything from a in New York City to and collections to light shows on the — and the obligatory onslaught of and from every extant media outlet and publisher. Twenty-five years after its debut, there’s still plenty to say about Friends — and to critique, or downright trash. Full disclosure: I actually wrote one of those many retrospectives, a on the history and legacy of Friends . One thing that becam.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation could be taxed hard if the Saez/Zucman wealth tax came to be. | Michele Crowe/CBS/Getty Images. Emmanuel Saez and Gabriel Zucman have a plan that could force foundations to pay out right away. In the past year, a massive, predominantly left-wing backlash to mega-philanthropy has broken out. Writers like , , and have turned the idea that philanthropy is taking on tasks that are properly the role of government — and allowing the rich to expand their influence and avoid taxation in the process — into a mainstream critique, one that have been forced to answer. But the critique has, with some exceptions, lacked a positive dimension: How, exactly, do we transition from the status quo to a world where the rich

Screencap via CNN. Giuliani tried to get ahead of the whistleblower scandal. He ended up making things worse. While , the Ukraine revelation prompted Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani — who was in the news months ago for his dealings with Ukraine — to go on CNN and made a disastrous attempt to get ahead of the story. Christina Animashaun/Vox. She was a working musician in Atlanta. Now she teaches pop stars how to sing. Jan Smith is tucked inside her recording studio on a summer night in metro Atlanta’s North Druid Hills neighborhood, conceptualizing background vocals for an unreleased track from her latest protege. Dressed in a black blouse with lace sleeves, white jeans, and black open-toe boots, the 63-year-old Smith sits calmly at the soundboard with a notepad as “Karma,” a country-pop cut from 21-year-old singer-songwriter Grace Asbury, plays through the speakers. For the next few hours, Smith and the singer, along with two of Smith’s producers, hum, mumble and “yabba dabba doo” melodies, piecing together disjointed sounds so tautly that it’s hard to.
