February was down $2.72 at $117 and April was $3.00 lower at. $115.25. Feeder cattle were sharply lower, mostly limit down, on the same. factors as the live pit. March was $4.17 lower at $136.02 and April was down. $4.50 at $137.60. Direct cash cattle markets were quiet.

The USDA says January 2020 poultry production was 4.525 billion. pounds, up 6% from January 2019. Chicken accounted for 3.997 billion pounds,. with turkey at 514.941 million and duck at 13.018 million pounds. The chicken slaughter was 4% higher at 828.726 million head, led by a. 4% jump in the young chicken category, while the turkey kill was down 1% at. 19.325 million and the duck slaughter was 3% higher at 2.528 million head.

The USDA says the amount of pork in cold storage at the end of January was nearly a monthly record. The domestic supply was 625.188 million pounds, up 11% on the year and just short of the all-time high set in January 2016. Pork production has been at or near record levels for more than a year because of the available market ready numbers and demand, especially export demand, hasn’t kept pace with the speed of production.

May down 12 cents at $16.59. June. through September contracts eight to 12 cents lower. Dry whey unchanged at $0.37. Blocks down unchanged at $1.7675. Barrels unchanged at $1.59. Butter down $0.0175 at $1.7375.

Cargill announced they will offer a private-label patty and ground product to foodservice and retail outlets, allowing them to capture a share of the alternative protein market. Cargill says they’ve invested seven billion dollars globally in. animal proteins in the last five years and made strategic investments in. alternative protein. The company says the new pea-based and soy-based. products will be made in their existing facilities including Waco, Texas, and are comparable in consistency and flavor to. beef-based offerings.

Direct cash cattle markets are quiet. The big features to start the. week will be the digestion of last week’s activity and the distribution of this. week’s new showlist. Last week’s business was mostly at $119 to $120 on the. live basis, generally steady to $1 higher than the previous week’s weighted. average, and mostly $190 dressed, about steady with the week before. The USDA’s. Cattle on Feed report showed a 1% decline in placements during January, the. first year to year dip since August 2019, but the total number of cattle on. feed at the start of February was still up 2% on the year.

The USDA says corn, soybean, and wheat export inspections during the week ending February 20th all fell below what’s needed meet projections for the marketing year. The 2019/20 marketing year started June 1st for wheat and September 1st for corn, sorghum, and soybeans. The USDA’s next set of supply and demand estimates is out March 10th. Wheat came out at 411,523 tons, down 91,559 from the week ending February 13th and 356,047 lower than the week ending February 21st, 2019.

President Trump travels to India this week in hopes of getting. trade negotiations back on track. Talks had been progressing for weeks, but U.S. Trade. Representative Robert Lighthizer did not make a scheduled trip to India ahead. of Trump’s visit. Canadian Minister of Agriculture Marie-Claude Bibeau says the country will ratify the US Mexico Canada Agreement soon. "We are going through our normal legislative process, but I can tell you it’s on the fast track," she says. During. the USDA’s Agricultural Outlook Forum on Friday, Bibeau said she wanted to reassure. everyone that Canada is committed to ratifying the agreement. "I don’t see any significant challenges and we should be able to proceed soon," she says.

There’s increasing data that indicates soybean farmers see. better yields when planting early. If only capturing more bushels was that simple. Field conditions are typically less than ideal early in the spring, and an official with BASF says the tradeoff between an April planting date and trouble with germination might be as easy as a seed treatment. BASF seed treatment product manager Melissa Chu says the data connecting more bushels with earlier planting dates is encouraging.
