Just nine percent of South Dakota corn had been harvested as of Sunday,well behind the nearly 30 percent on average. Soybean harvest was 33 percent complete, behind the 76. percent five-year average. Winter wheat planting was on pace at 95 percent with 80. percent emerged, ahead of last year and the average.

Rains brought much-needed moisture to farmers across most of the state. According to the latest Crop Report from the USDA corn, soybean, and cotton harvests continue with many farmers reporting favorable yields. Fifty-two percent of cotton has been harvested. Ninety-six percent of corn has been harvested. Sixty-two percent of soybeans have been harvested with 96. percent dropping yields. Thirty-four percent of winter wheat has been planted and 11. percent has emerged with 69 percent rated good to excellent.

Ohio experienced cooler than. normal temperatures and less than normal rainfall last week. The USDA says conditions. were ideal for harvest across much of the state although corn maturity and. percent harvested is behind normal levels. As of Sunday, 26 percent of. Ohio’s corn crop is harvested. Fifty-five percent of. soybeans are harvested. The good to excellent ratings were 36 percent for corn and 35 percent for soybeans.

Wisconsin farmers were in the fields last week between intermittent. showers to make harvest progress. As of Sunday, Soybean harvest reached 32%, only one day. behind last year and nine days behind the five-year average. The crop is rated. 66% good to excellent. Corn for grain harvest is 7% complete and corn for silage. harvest reached 69%. Ten percent of Wisconsin corn has yet to reach the dented. stage and 4% has not reached the dough stage.

Minnesota’s harvest progress continues to be hampered by wet field conditions and high moisture content in the crops. As of Sunday, only 11 percent of corn and 42 percent of. soybeans had been harvested. Both figures are nearly two weeks behind average. Dry edible bean harvest reached 68 percent; sugarbeet harvest was 47 percent complete; potato harvest was at 90 percent; and sunflower harvest was just getting underway.

Soybeans were mostly modestly lower on spread trade and profit taking. The trade expects another slower week of harvest activity, with wet weather and cooler temperatures in some areas over the next few days. The USDA says 94% of U.S. soybeans are dropping leaves, compared to the five-year average of 97%, and 46% of the crop is harvested, compared to 64% on average, with 54% of the crop in good to excellent condition, steady with a week ago.

The U.S. corn and soybean harvests have yet to break the halfway mark. Both crops saw historically slow planting paces and weather has varied widely from development through harvest. As of Sunday, 86% of corn is mature, compared to the five-year average of 97%, and 30% is harvested, compared to 47% on average. 56% of the crop is in good to excellent shape, up 1% on the week, but down 12% from this time last year.

Corn silage harvest is 73 percent complete. and grain harvest is at 14 percent. Soybeans are 90 percent dropping leaves, 37 percent. harvested, and condition is 46 percent good to excellent. Dry Beans are 68 percent harvested. Sugarbeets are 55 percent good to excellent. with 23 percent harvested. Young people remain interested in farming despite the toughest stretch in agriculture since the 1980’s farm crisis. National Young Farmers Coalition land access program director Holly Rippon-Butler says those aspiring to be part of the next generation of farmers aren’t deterred by the depressed farm economy. "I think young people are getting into farming for so many different reasons, and many of them are really seeing it as an opportunity to live and have a career that’s aligned with their values.".
