11 Oct 2019 --- Consumers are looking for increasingly personalized levels of care, particularly within the digestive space. This is according to Lisa Ruttledge, COO and Co-Founder of FoodMarble, a start-up producing a portable breath test and app, dubbed FoodMarble Aire, to measure and track digestive health. She speaks to NutritionInsight about the potential for technology in the nutrition industry, as well as the company’s collaboration agreement with biotechnology company Carbiotix. The partners will hold a preliminary study to examine whether breath hydrogen can be used as a non-invasive, real-time measure of changes in microbiome composition.

The discovery further underscores the blurring of the lines between the food and drug space, and spotlights the role probiotics can play in a holistic approach to disease. As the science investigating psoriasis has yet to deliver a cure for the disease, this clinical study marks a significant step forward to alleviating the symptoms of psoriasis, a disease that affects 2 to 5 percent of the global population.

10 Oct 2019 --- Brexit could present an opportunity to review value-added tax (VAT) rates to rebalance the cost of food and drink in favor of health. This is according to Professor Dame Sally Davies’s final independent report, following the end of her eight-year tenure as Chief Medical Officer for England and Chief Medical Adviser to the UK government. Her report calls on the UK government to take “bold action” to slash children’s obesity rates, which has “cruel and avoidable” health impacts.

09 Oct 2019 --- A new DuPont study DuPont has uncovered some of the prebiotic mechanisms behind its product Care4U 2’-Fucosyllactose (2’-FL). The study found that it beneficially changes microbiota composition and the production of microbial metabolites compared to galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) and lactose. The effects elicited to microbiota and metabolite composition by 2’-FL were between the responses evoked by GOS and lactose, which indicates that 2’-FL is selectively fermented by the infant microbes.

09 Oct 2019 --- GutGuide has launched a probiotic oil that revitalizes, moisturizes and calms atopic dermatitis (AD) as found in a study using the products. AD, also known as atopic eczema, affects between 1 to 10 percent of adults worldwide and is associated with a personal or family history of type 1 allergies, allergic rhinitis and asthma. It is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by a reduced microbiome diversity, meaning that the introduction of skinGuide, which contains two live Lactobacillus rhamnosus strains, could be a powerful tool in fighting this condition. It also further highlights the diversity of probiotic applications.

08 Oct 2019 --- Regular mushroom consumption may lead to a reduced risk of prostate cancer. This is according to a cohort study conducted by the Tohoku University, which analyzed more than 36,000 Japanese men’s mushroom intake to discover potential health benefits mushrooms provide. Published in the International Journal of Cancer, the study suggests that habitual mushroom intake might help to prevent prostate cancer. The effect was especially pronounced in men aged 50 or older and those with relatively low fruit and vegetable intake and high meat and dairy intake.

08 Oct 2019 --- Bifidobacteria breve (Bif195) can prevent and heal ulcers caused by acetylsalicyclic acid, commonly known as aspirin. This is according to clinicians at the Mercy Hospital and investigators at Cork’s APC Microbiome Ireland, whose study is published in Gastroenterology. The study was in collaboration with Chr. Hansen and builds on APC Microbiome Ireland’s earlier observations. These showed how some bifidobacteria produce a protective protein that promotes healing of the intestinal epithelial lining. These findings are critical, given that more than 30 percent of US adults over the age of 40 are estimated to take aspirin daily.

Citing operational costs and rising regulatory demands, the company notes that the price correction is needed to “ensure Beneo remains a reliable and credible industry partner.” The recent industry push for fiber inclusion has been galvanized by the increasing clinical evidence supporting fiber’s efficacy, as well as regulatory greenlights such as from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in June last year.

07 Oct 2019 --- Mexican chemical products company Grupo AlEn and ECOM have joined forces to form a new company called Phenolaeis. The venture will bring to market the “world’s first” Palm Fruit Bioactive Complex (PFBc) – a multifunctional ingredient boasting heart and cognitive health, healthy aging and sports nutrition applications. The ingredient was developed in collaboration with two Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) professors and will be presented at SupplySide West, taking place later this month, in Las Vegas, US.

The industry is seeing several innovative launches at SupplySide West taking place later this month. At the show, INS Farms will showcase its elderberry prebiotic juice powder that includes Taiyo’s Sunfiber. Sirio Pharma will showcase one-stop services for all plant-based nutraceutical applications, while Gencor will introduce its new herbal ingredient for prostate and urinary problems.
