18 Oct 2019 --- Burger King’s unveiling of The Impossible Whopper is driving traffic to the fast food chain, according to Barclays analysts. In April, Burger King became a non-meat platform pioneer, testing the Impossible Whopper in 59 St. Louis restaurants before rolling out the meatless burger across US restaurants in August. Now, Barclays data teams have analyzed geolocation data to assess the impact surrounding the test and the national launch. It reveals the preliminary trial generated up to 18 percent gains in the St. Louis locations versus no comparable gains for McDonald’s St. Louis restaurants. 18 Oct 2019 --- An agreement between the EU and the UK chief negotiators has been reached, which is backed by agri-food chain representatives who are calling for swift ratification in UK Parliament tomorrow. This new deal is positioned as paving the way for an “orderly withdrawal,” a principle that agri-food chain players have been repeatedly calling for. The tentative deal has been met with mixed reactions.

18 Oct 2019 --- Leading certifier of fair trade products in North America Fair Trade USA reports significant growth in its produce category, evidenced by a 30 percent increase in produce sales volume in 2018. Growth in the produce category included the introduction of eight new Fair Trade Certified products. Joining more than 60 certified products, the newly-certified fruits and vegetables include lemons, limes and papayas from Mexico and mangos from Brazil. Brussels sprouts, artichokes, grapes and blueberries grown the US also enter the produce category.

17 Oct 2019 --- US-based emerging beverage brand, The Plug, has launched its science-backed anti-hangover drink. The brand differentiates itself from market competitors in its “all-natural” proprietary formula with zero added sugar and an “exceptional flavor profile,” all at only 40 calories per serving. In clinical research trials, The Plug was shown to significantly reduce specific hangover symptoms, including sleepiness, headaches, vomiting, dizziness and nausea.

The company continues to see positive returns in its plant-based offerings category, following the company’s divestment of its cold cuts and meat-based products, which was made in a bid to keep pace with current consumer trends. The strategic review of the Herta charcuterie business is ongoing and expected to be completed by the end of the year.

17 Oct 2019 --- Sustainably producing enough food, feed, fiber and bioenergy for the expected 2050 population of 10 billion people is a critical challenge facing food and farming industries. New analysis by Virginia Tech asserts that global agricultural productivity must increase to an average annual rate of 1.73 percent – from the current 1.63 percent – to meet growing demand. Low levels of productivity growth and high rates of food insecurity could also catalyze a spike in obesity levels because people will rely on cheaper, less nutrient-dense food. Agri-food players must ramp up R&D, sustainable practices and the use of digital technologies to accelerate innovation.

16 Oct 2019 --- The EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council has set five out of ten Total Allowable Catches (TACs) which is beyond the EU fisheries’ legal requirements for sustainable fishing levels. These fishing limits will apply to fish caught in the Baltic Sea in 2020. Prominent fish conservation NGOs are publicly vocalizing their outrage, calling for quotas moving closer toward zero TACs to end overfishing in Europe.

The research outlines a prominent shift in common perceptions of the clean label standard. Consumers are now looking beyond clean label status as a filter of unacceptable ingredients and paying closer attention to the nutritional and environmental benefits of clean ingredients. In a crowded marketplace, the report emphasizes the value of reformulation with “real and added-functionality” ingredients.

16 Oct 2019 --- Positioned as both a natural sweetener and a flavoring, Dirafrost’s new cacao fruit puree is made from the white pulp surrounding cacao beans – which are typically destined for chocolate production. As the demand for cacao products rises, methods that utilize the whole of the cacao fruit are also growing. These are increasingly highlighted as the sustainable way forward. 15 Oct 2019 --- Biomarine company Algaia is joining forces with ingredient business Herbstreith & Fox KG Germany (H&F) to provide a sustainable combination of pectin and alginates for multiple baking applications. The products can be marketed as either single or blended ingredients, while tapping into the mounting clean label trend. This has seen consumers turn toward shorter ingredient lists in a quest to feel better about their dietary choices. The companies are now identifying further clean label solutions that combine Algaia’s alginates with pectin and citrus and apple fibers manufactured by H&F.

15 Oct 2019 --- A new report on climate change is urging the UK government to do more to promote vegan diets to help fight climate change – as Animal Rebellion protests continue this week. The behavior change paper, written by an Imperial College London academic Dr. Richard Carmichael, recommends plant-based diets as one of the three significant changes the UK must make, alongside lowering emissions produced by transport and heating. The report states that a shift to vegan diets is a “huge opportunity for consumers to reduce their carbon footprints and enjoy important health benefits for no additional cost.”

The agreement marks Caldic’s expansion of its European footprint by entering the French food ingredients sector. Caldic says this latest addition is “a great fit” to the company’s current business in the European Bakery, Dairy, Beverage, Savory, Confectionary and Nutrition markets.

14 Oct 2019 --- A joint venture (JV) between Italian-based Silvateam Food Ingredients and German JRS Group has been closed. The companies will join forces in the production and sales of pectin and texturizing systems as well as in the distribution of tara gum. According to the announcement, the JV will invest significantly in the development and production of novel vegetable-based texturizing solutions that have high consumer acceptance. This is in response to the increasing demand for label-friendly food ingredients.
