Plant biologist Ross Sozzani says her field is in need of a new revolution, and it’s taking root at NC State. In the 1960s, the first green revolution began with the introduction of fertilizers and pesticides. Today, the second revolution — focused on genetics, genomics and enabling technologies — must accommodate a global population that’s projected to reach 9.8 billion by 2050. Major agricultural innovation is needed to meet the world’s ever-increasing need for food, fuel and fiber. And Sozzani has set her sights on an innovative way to get there: 3D-printed plants. Her ultimate goal is to build plants with specific, enhanced agricultural traits. By harnessing the precision of 3D printing, her team may be able to engineer plants that are,

S&W Seed Company announced the expansion of its Australian agriculture market presence through the addition of elite wheat germplasm to its portfolio of products. Under its exclusive, prepaid license from Corteva Agriscience, S&W will immediately offer a number of commercialized varieties to the Australian market. S&W will also continue a breeding program for varieties which S&W believes have the potential to offer a number of benefits to Australian wheat growers as compared to existing commercial varieties, including superior disease resistance, superior yields and grain quality to suit the diverse Australian conditions. The addition of wheat to the S&W portfolio, which also includes sorghum, alfalfa and sunflower, advances S&W’s strategic.

Education and skills gaps have long been a challenge for the agriculture industry, as the demand for qualified candidates in agricultural science careers has significantly outpaced the pool of applicants with adequate training and education. Bayer, in collaboration with National 4-H Council, today released the results of the second annual Science Matters survey, which explores the opinions of parents, teachers and - new this year - students on the importance of agri-science in high school curriculum.

Plants can tell the time, and this affects their responses to certain herbicides used in agriculture according to new research led by the University of Bristol. The study, in collaboration with Syngenta, found that plant circadian rhythms regulate the sensitivity of plants to a widely used herbicide according to the time of day. The findings could benefit agriculture by reducing crop loss and improving harvests.

With world population projected to exceed eight billion people by 2025, food security is already a pressing global problem. Part of the solution will come from efforts to increase the yields of current food crops, but the global need for food only continues to grow, and may soon outpace farmers’ ability to increase production via conventional means such as breeding, application of fertilizers, and improved land management. Martin Jonikas, an Assistant Professor in Princeton’s Department of Molecular Biology, is collaborating with Alistair McCormick from the University of Edinburgh, Luke Mackinder from the University of York and Howard Griffiths from Cambridge University on a novel approach to boost crop productivity.

A crop entomologist at Kansas State University is urging sorghum growers to be patient as they consider options for protecting this year’s crop from damaging pests. Jeff Whitworth says that using insecticides on sorghum can be a “balancing act” between choosing to treat for headworms or the sugarcane aphid – both of which can severely stunt the crop’s growth.

As many regions worldwide baked under some of the most persistent heatwaves on record, scientists at a major conference in Canada shared data on the impact of spiraling temperatures on wheat. In the Sonora desert in northwestern Mexico, nighttime temperatures varied 4.4 degrees Celsius between 1981 and 2018, research from the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) shows. Across the world in Siberia, nighttime temperatures rose 2 degrees Celsius between 1988 and 2015, according to Vladimir Shamanin, a professor at Russia’s Omsk State Agrarian University who conducts research with the Kazakhstan-Siberia Network on Spring Wheat Improvement.
