Flexible packaging maker Sealed Air Corp. said Aug. 11 it's made an unspecified equity investment in recycling company Plastic Energy Ltd. Charlotte, N.C.-based Sealed Air said the investment would help the company provide more recycled content plastic packaging for its customers, as part of a pledge it made in 2018 to have 50 percent recycled content across all its packaging by 2025. Plastic Energy, based in London, has technology to take what are traditionally harder to recycle grades of plastic and turn that into oil, to be reused as feedstock again for plastic or into what it said is a low-carbon fuel. The firm currently operates two commercial plants in Spain and has more projects under development in Western Europe and Asia.

While the results announced by Borealis AG for the second quarter of 2020 could not be called good, the company nonetheless maintains a positive outlook. "Relatively speaking, and looking at some of the others in the sector, we haven't done at all badly," CEO Alfred Stern said in a telephone interview. The company announced a second-quarter net profit of 64 million euros ($75.3 million) on Aug. 10, compared to 328 million euros ($386 million) in the same quarter of 2019. The profit fall was mainly driven by a drop in the value of its inventory due to the declining oil price, a decreased advantage from the use of light feedstock versus naphtha, and the unplanned outage of Borealis steam cracker in Sweden.

Injury and illness rates in plastics processing plants dropped about 20 percent in the last decade, but smaller factories remain much more dangerous places to work than larger facilities, government safety statistics show. Experts point to a number of factors for the improvement across the industry as a whole, from more technology and automation to reduce hazards, to more focus on safety within companies and efforts to analyze accidents and near-accidents. The plastic product manufacturing industry's injury and illness rate in 2018, the last year statistics are available, fell to a record low of 3.8. While that is progress, the data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics also points to a troubling disparity in injury and illness rates between

Some of the innovations the automotive industry has brought to the creation of personal protective equipment for front-line health care workers are so impressive they are likely to live on after the pandemic fades. Freudenberg Sealing Technologies — a company best known for the seals it makes to keep fluids in engines, transmissions, axles and brake systems — is using its manufacturing prowess to produce items that are reducing the physical toll on health care workers of wearing the safety equipment many hours per day. At the company's Troy, Ohio, plant, engineers Eric Hunt, Kevin Belisle and Marcus Lewis came up with a urethane ear guard that helps hold a face mask in place without causing discomfort where the straps fit behind the ears. Don't rely on caterpillars to clean up your trash. A few years ago, a study came out of China on how insect larvae could eat expanded polystyrene, raising hopes about a solution to plastics trash. Then came a study that a certain kind of moth larvae could eat polyethylene. But don't start celebrating just yet. Fraunhofer Institute in Darmstadt, Germany, has taken a closer look and is strongly urging caution. "The results to date have been startling: According to the project team, the caterpillars eat holes in PE foil, taking in small amounts and losing considerable body mass in the process," of our sister publication Sustainable Plastics . "However, having nibbled through the material, the larvae then stop eating.". Using high-resolution micr.

This year we're adding some questions about how CEOs are dealing with the coronavirus pandemic and their expectations for 2021. That's in addition to asking CEOs to share their stories about how they ended
