Sea-surface temperatures remain slightly warmer than average across much of the Equatorial Pacific, although some slight cooling has been observed across the eastern Pacific Ocean in recent weeks. The latest long-range climate models suggest that this weak El Nino will gradually transition to a neutral phase over the next couple months. This neutral phase is then forecast to persist through the fall and likely the upcoming winter season.

The energy sector has become a primary target for cyberattacks. This means that besides the ongoing transformation to smart grids there is, in parallel, an increased need for cyberdefense. However, deploying a smart grid without suitable cybersecurity might result in serious consequences; such as grid instability, utility fraud, the loss of user information – which would be a serious GDPR breach in Europe – or, in the worst case, could result in fatalities (if smart homes lose power in the middle of the winter and people get hurt by the cold).

The UK’s National Grid is investigating the root cause of two generator failures at the country’s Little Barford gas-fired power station in Bedfordshire and Hornsea offshore wind farm, which began operating in June after near-simultaneous failures at both sites left 900,000 people in parts of Wales and England without power for nine hours.
