With its latest police vehicle, Ford has taken a deep dive into human-centric design. Stephen Holmes learns how watching police agencies at work inspired the purpose-built 2020 Interceptor. It’s the sirens and lights that usually alert you to the fact that the car in your rear-view mirror is a police vehicle. With the new 2020 Police Interceptor, that might not happen. Instead, the Interceptor could silently glide up behind you in electric mode, so you wouldn’t know you were in trouble until the very last moment. In other words, it’s a stealthy beast. The typically mild-mannered, ‘soccer mom’ favourite, the Ford Explorer SUV has been redesigned from the ground up as a serious, specialist law enforcement vehicle. “Everything, from how we spec.

Having arrived at a design for a device to reduce the possibility of suffering a Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), RBR Active needed to take it a step further and ready its Legflow product for manufacture. The idea behind the device is to use it to carry out three simple foot exercises, leading to a claimed 11-fold increase in blood flow to the lower limbs - with its compact size making it effective anywhere during long periods of inactivity such as air travel, working in an office, being in hospital, or just through prolonged sitting. This tough product would need to be injection moulded form polypropylene, so RBR contacted in Northamptonshire to help design its idea for manufacture, bringing the concept to reality in under 11 months.

New Zealand’s loose forward Ardie Savea will take to the field in the Rugby Union World Cup wearing a pair of specially designed goggles, making him the first to do so in the international tournament’s history. The player discovered several years ago that the vision in his left eye was deteriorating, and decided to wear the goggles to protect his vision - potentially saving him from losing his sight in the eye altogether. Until now the use of goggles was forbidden in contact rugby games, although in an effort to allow people who need to wear corrective lenses to do so safely while playing, the International Rugby Board commissioned to develop specific ‘Rugby Goggles’.

It wasn’t until we saw a Figure4 3D printer out in the wild - in the labs of Imperial College London, more on that at a later date - that we realised just what it is actually capable of, so it’s impressive to see 3D Systems launching another five materials for the machine. Skipping the jargon about it ‘replacing injection moulding’, the printer itself is super fast, and the output is incredibly detailed (think threading and internal structures) and quick to post process, and now it has a range of materials that make it a better value option - all led by tough Pro-Blk 10. 3D Systems explains the following four materials as follows:
