Enphase Energy has booked about 50 megawatt-hours of sales of its long-promised Encharge battery in North American markets since launching it in July, tapping a growing demand for energy storage from residential solar customers, and laying the groundwork for a more complete home backup power system set to arrive early next year. Sales of the battery system made up about 10 percent of the microinverter maker’s $178.5 million in third quarter revenues, CEO Badri Kothandaraman said in Tuesday’s third quarter earnings conference call.

A Saturday ruling from the U.S. Court of International Trade has once again paused the Trump administration’s plans to extend Section 201 tariffs to two-sided solar panels. Judge Gary Katzmann placed a temporary restraining order on an October presidential proclamation, which members of the solar industry argued should fall under the purview of an injunction the court had already put in place to stop the administration from tariffing bifacial solar panels. For the moment, the ruling quashes the administration’s latest salvo to extend the reach of its tariffs on imported solar, a fight the Trump administration continues to pursue just days away from the U.S. presidential election.

Solstice is a community solar company trying to make PV accessible to everyone. And that mission is influenced by CEO Steph Speirs' background. Steph grew up one of three kids in Hawaii. Her mom had immigrated from Korea. She knows what eviction feels like and what it’s like to skirt homelessness. And she knows how a poor credit score can sink a human being. She got a scholarship to a private high school, became a National Merit Scholar and earned master's degrees at Yale, Princeton and MIT. In this interview, we’ll hear how her time in the Obama administration led to a summer internship with the nonprofit impact investor Acumen. She worked on solar lanterns in India. Her time in Yemen, India and then Pakistan led to an awakening about clea.

Long duration storage occupies an enviable position in the . Its allure has proven more durable than energy blockchain, and its commercialization is further along than super-buzzy green hydrogen. Depending on who you talk to, long duration storage technology can knock out coal and gas peaker plants, turn renewables into round-the-clock resources and generally pave the way for a carbon-free grid. But beyond the high-level predictions, it’s hard to find a consistent definition of what this category actually means, and what it's supposed to do exactly. That's largely because a market for such things hasn't really existed. That’s starting to change. On October 15, a coalition of community choice aggregators in California released the targeting

Most U.S. voters action on climate change. But even if November brings a win for Joe Biden, who has vowed to transition the country’s electricity system to carbon-free sources by 2035, significant policy changes are far from a given. Enacting climate and clean energy legislation is expected to be a bitter fight, even if Democrats are able to win control of the White House and Congress. Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski and Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, a Democrat, acknowledged those challenges during a Wednesday hosted by Stanford University. They also highlighted areas where they hope legislators can turn consensus into actual law. “That has been our ultimate challenge,” said Murkowski, who represents Alaska, during the event focused on bipartisan.

After years in which making money seemed largely beside the point, electric car leader Tesla showed investors Wednesday that it can make substantial quarterly profits. The company delivered a record number of cars in the third quarter, created a record $1.4 billion free cash flow and achieved record profitability, all while building three new factories on three continents.

Iberdrola’s Avangrid has agreed to acquire PNM Resources, owner of regulated utilities in New Mexico and Texas, enlarging what is already one of the largest U.S. utility groups — and one with an aggressive focus on renewable energy. The combined company will encompass 10 regulated electricity suppliers across six states, with 4 million customers ranging from Avangrid’s stronghold in New England and New York to PNM Resources’ base in the Southwest.

Barry Cinnamon is CEO of California's Cinnamon Energy Systems. I’m writing this in San Jose during a Mars-like red sky, light ash occasionally falling, and a faint smell of smoke in the air. Solar output has been down by 60 percent even though the fires are at least 50 miles from here. Some people say this is the new normal. In all likelihood it will get worse as we experience more extreme weather events and sea levels rise from melting ice sheets. Many people in California are literally powerless since our utility infrastructure is failing to keep pace with the effects of climate change, magnified by our society’s increasing electric power needs. Fortunately, with current solar, battery and heat pump technology every building with a sunny

California regulators said this year that the state will by 2026. But the technologies that can cost-effectively meet that need have so far attracted more attention from white paper authors than paying customers. That changed on Thursday, when a coalition of eight Californian community choice aggregators, led by Silicon Valley Clean Energy (SVCE), published a seeking 500 megawatts of long duration storage capacity. In doing so, they beat the state's investor-owned utilities in making good on the California Public Utilities Commission's call to invest in this resource. "We know that this is going to be needed in our future," SVCE CEO Girish Balachandran said in an interview. "As load-serving entities, we said, 'Let’s take the first step of m.

In a year when clean energy and clean vehicle jobs were supposed to increase by some 175,000, we are down by half a million jobs. On this episode of The Energy Gang, we will tell you why, and explain the numbers. What will reverse the decline? Then: Did New Jersey just pass the most sweeping environmental justice law in the country? The new law will mean big changes for industrial sites — and the neighborhoods that often feel their worst impacts. And last: What about all that nice, flat water in hydropower reservoirs? Could we float solar panels on it? The Department of Energy says we could. And it would actually produce massive amounts of electricity. : Clean Energy Sector Enters Final Months of 2020 Down 478,000 Jobs. : Most U.S. Oil Job L.

Utility pilot projects aren’t famous for standout financial success. Usually the goal is to verify a technology in the field before attempting broader deployment. Sometimes nothing follows the pilot. Vermont utility Green Mountain Power not only verified the efficacy of residential batteries for meeting grid needs, it saved its customers millions of dollars with them. Now, has been ratified by the state’s Public Utility Commission as a permanent residential storage tariff, which means battery installations, and utility savings, will continue to rise. At a time when forward-thinking companies are excited to erect at some point in the next few years, Green Mountain Power represents something of anomaly. It already has not a couple hundred, bu.

Array Technologies, a New Mexico-based maker of solar tracking systems, launched onto the Nasdaq Global Market on Thursday, capping one of the biggest U.S. renewable energy IPOs of recent years. In listing its shares publicly, Array is riding two trends: growing demand for equipment that allows solar projects to squeeze out more power, and strong demand for clean energy stocks ahead of November’s presidential election. Even with an upsized IPO pricing shares at $22, Array surged after hitting the market under ticker symbol ‘ARRY.’ The shares soared nearly 60 percent by Thursday afternoon, to above $35, giving the company a market capitalization of more than $4.4 billion. Array itself of common stock in the IPO, raising $154 million — .

SunDensity, a solar startup promising 20 percent module efficiency gains due to specially coated glass, raised $2.5 million in initial financing to begin commercializing its product. If commercially successful, the technology could measurably increase the output of solar panels, reducing the number of modules needed to produce equal amounts of electricity and cutting installation costs. Rather than increasing the ability of a panel to absorb a wider spectrum of light through more mainstream heterojunction technology, SunDensity coating, when applied under panel glass, turns blue photons red, allowing more absorption.
