[The Conversation Africa] The book, "Parcel of Death", is a journey to a revolutionary past. It is a journey but not a return to the past. Former journalist Gaongalelwe Tiro has written a book about his uncle Onkgopotse Tiro - a revolutionary spirit who powered the student uprisings of June 1976 in Soweto, Guguletu - Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Umlazi - Durban, Bloemfontein and Pietermaritzburg.

PETALING JAYA : Malaysia’s position on the Melbourne Mercer Global Pension Index (MMGPI) has improved to 16 and is now rated C+, compared with its ranking of 20 and a rating of C in 2018. In a statement, the MMGPI said Malaysia achieved an index of 60.6, from 58.5 in 2018, surpassing the average global index of 59.3. This was primarily due to the updated data on the net replacement rate published by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The MMGPI’s data suggests as pension assets increase, individuals feel wealthier and therefore are likely to borrow more. Mercer’s Dr David Knox, author of the study, said the growth in assets held by pension funds means households feel more financially secure in having future in. (Africa) 10/21/2019 00:20
One frequently cited yet understudied channel through which money matters for college students is course availability- colleges may respond to budgetary pressure by reducing course offerings. Open admissions policies, binding class size constraints, and heavy reliance on state funding may make this channel especially salient at community colleges, which enroll 47% of U.S. undergraduates in public colleges and 55% of underrepresented minority students. We use administrative course registration data from a large community college in California to test this mechanism. By exploiting discontinuities in course admissions created by waitlists, we find that students stuck on a waitlist and shut out of a course section were 25% more likely to take z.
This paper uses administrative data to analyze a large and 8-year long employer payroll tax rate cut in Sweden for young workers aged 26 or less. First, we document that while active, the reform raised youth employment among the treated workers. The long-run effects are twice as large as the medium-run effects and likely driven by labor demand (as workers' take-home wages did not respond). Second, we document novel labor-demand-driven "hysteresis" from this policy – i.e. persistent employment effects even after the subsidy no longer applies – along two dimensions. Over the lifecycle, employment effects persist even after workers age out of eligibility. Two years after the repeal, employment remains elevated at the maximal reform level in th.

We study the estimation of substitution patterns within the discrete choice framework developed by Berry (1994) and Berry, Levinsohn, and Pakes (1995). Our objective, is to illustrate the consequences of using weak instruments in this non-linear GMM context, and propose a new class of instruments that can be used to estimate a large family of models with aggregate data. We argue that relevant instruments should reflect the (exogenous) degree of differentiation of each product in a market (Differentiation IVs), and provide a series of examples to illustrate the performance of simple instrument functions.

When the independent browser from Norway, Opera, was bought out by a Chinese company, its co-founder Jon von Tetzchner, decided to create a new user-friendly browse, which he named Vivaldi. Now three years after refining the desktop version, the makers have launched a beta version for Android mobile devices. It offers end-to-end encrypted sync of your passwords, bookmarks, notes, open tabs and more... allaying a major concern regarding privacy, these days. It has most of the trademark features of the PC version and a few more: In the bottom-left corner of the browser, users will find Panels, a quick way to access useful tools like Bookmarks, History, Notes, and Downloads. And to the right, the tab switcher lets users access regular, private.
We consider inference based on linear conditional moment inequalities, which arise in a wide variety of economic applications, including many structural models. We show that linear conditional structure greatly simplifies confidence set construction, allowing for computationally tractable projection inference in settings with nuisance parameters. Next, we derive least favorable critical values that avoid conservativeness due to projection. Finally, we introduce a conditional inference approach which ensures a strong form of insensitivity to slack moments, as well as a hybrid technique which combines the least favorable and conditional methods. Our conditional and hybrid approaches are new even in settings without nuisance parameters. We fin.
