The Movement for Quality Government intends to appeal to the Supreme Court, demanding that the first Knesset vote on establishing a commission of inquiry into the Submarine Affair, which resulted in the motion being approved, be honored. Attorney Tomer Na'or, head of the Movement's legal branch, said: "Yet again, the Knesset Speaker, who is supposed to be a state official provided a stabilizing effect on the government, has overruled the legislative which he is obligated to serve and protect."
Responding to criticism of his invalidation of the first round of voting on the establishment of a commission of inquiry into the Submarine Affair, Knesset Speaker Yariv Levin (Likud) said: "I will not allow the results of voting to be distorted." He added that he would not allow the "Knesset's rules to be trampled upon. According to the Knesset's bylaws, the deputy Speaker was obligated to announce the vote when it was requested of him, and he failed to do this. Furthermore, when electronic voting takes place, it must be announced in a clear manner, with the subject matter likewise announced, and Knesset members must be allowed time to take their seats. None of these basic formalities was adhered to, constituting a grave incident that shou.
The Knesset Speaker, MK Yariv Levin (Likud) has invalidated the results of the Knesset vote for establishing a parliamentary commission of inquiry into the Submarine Affair, calling for a second vote to be held. In response, MKs who supported the motion called out, "For shame, for shame," and Levin responded: "Your bullying isn't making an impression on anyone." Opposition MKs have now left the plenum in protest.
Justice Minister Avi Nissenkorn (Blue & White) has praised the state prosecution for its decision to try the soldier who shot Iyad Al Halak for manslaughter. "The shooting of Iyad Al Halak was a tragic episode," Nissenkorn said. "There is nothing we can do to lessen the pain felt by his family. While we must give our support to the security forces who protect us with their very bodies, we must also ensure that they do not deviate from basic moral standards. I am more than satisfied with the professional manner with which the issue has been dealt, and I intend to see that the Police Investigatory Bureau continues to make reforms that will benefit the cause of justice and the entire community."
