Pasadena-based robot developer Miso Robotics is turning towards equity crowdfunding for its next fundraise, the company said this week. Miso--known for its kitchen assistant robot, Flippy--says it has started opening up reservations for a new equity crowdfunding round. The funding is also being supported by Wavemaker Labs, the "startup studio" arm of investment firm Wavemaker Ventures. Miso Robotics is led by CEO and co-founder Buck Jordan, and already has raised $15M in earlier round of funding. Those earlier funding rounds came from Wavemaker Labs, MAG Ventures, and CaliGroup. CaliGroup is the parent company of fast food chain CaliBurger, which has said it is planning to use "Flippy" in more than 50 of its locations. Miso Robotics says it.

Los Angeles-based expense and invoice management software developer Chrome River has signed on a big new customer, enterprise software developer TIBCO Software. According to Chrome River, TIBCO will deploy its Chrome River EXPENSE software across its organization, replace an existing expense management solution. Financial impact of the customer win was not announced. TIBCO said that, in particular, the "mobile-first" design of Chrome River's software allows its traveling employees access to expense management.

Santa Monica-based Aircam, founded by serial entrepreneurs Evan and Ryan Rifkin, has raised $6.5M in a funding round, to offer up a new service giving attendees at events instant access to pictures taken by professional photographers. According to Aircam, the funding was led by Upfront Ventures, and also included Comcast Ventures. The Rifkins previously founded Burstly/Testflight. Aircam offers up its service for $99 an hour, letting guests at events instantly gain access to the pictures taken by wedding photographers and other professionals at events. The service works with certified professionals -- "Aircam Pros" -- who take the photos, with Aircam handling editing and providing those photographers guaranteed pricing for shooting events.

Los Angeles-based ECMC Foundation, a foundation that provides funding to both nonprofit and for-profit ventures focused on college success and career readiness, has helped backed two female entrepreneurs, along with investment firm Chloe Capital. According to ECMC and Chloe Capital, they made an investment in Inscribe, the developer of an app used to help students succeed through community support. Size of the investment was not announced, however, Chloe Capital and ECMC Foundation said the investment was made in Los Angeles at an investment pitch competition at L.A. Live, where women entrepreneurs pitched live for up to $250,000 in funding. ECMC Foundation is based in Los Angeles; Chloe Capital in New York; and Inscribe is based in Denver.

According to a security report from BitDefender, it discovered a major security breach in the software of Santa Monica-based video doorbell and security camera maker Ring. Apparently, Ring--now owned by Amazon--had been sending the passwords of a user's Wi-Fi network in plain text, making it possible for hackers to intercept a user's Wi-Fi password. The vulnerability was apparently fixed by Ring in September. According to a spokesperson for Ring, who reached out to our publication this morning, "Customer trust is important to us and we take the security of our devices seriously. We rolled out an automatic security update addressing the issue, and it's since been patched." Ring has faced quite a bit of criticism for enabling widespread surve.

Santa Monica-based Cornerstone OnDemand is looking to make it easier for Gen Z workers to adapt to the work force, with a new set of content it calls "Digital Native Advancement (DNA)". According to Cornerstone OnDemand, the new content will "help Digital Natives develop skills they need to thrive in the modern workplace." Gen Z are those people born between 1990 and 1999. Cornerstone OnDemand said that "42% of Gen Zers say they interact more with their phones than they do with other people" and said that, as a result of that, "there is a growing concern that these Digital Natives may lack the interpersonal skills required to succeed in the modern workplace." Los Angeles-based utility-scale solar power project developer 8minute Solar Energy says it is in a partnership with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP), to build a new, 4000MW solar energy plant near California City. According to 8minute, the project also includes up to 300MW/1200MWh (megawatt hours) of battery storage, which can be used to provide power when the sun is not shining. 8minute Solar Energy said the first phase of the project will start operations in 2022, with full operational capabilities in 2023. Long Beach-based Virgin Orbit, the small satellite launch company founded by Richard Branson, has received a $9.5M grant from the United Kingdom's Space Agency (UKSA), to help the company set up a launch site in Cornwall, UK. According to Virgin Orbit, the new site will be part of Cornwall Airport Newquay, and will be called Spaceport Cornwall. Virgin Orbit has been developing a space launch system based on a 747 aircraft and Launcher One, a rocket that is dropped from the bottom of the 747 from high elevation. The satellite launch system is designed to take small satellites (Cubesats) into space for less than the cost of a traditional rocket launch.

Agoura Hills-based A2 Biotherapeutics, a biotechnology firm started by veterans of Amgen which is developing cell therapies for cancer patients, has raised $57M in a Series A funding round, the company said this week. The startup was founded by Scott Foraker and Alexander Kamb. The funding came from The Column Group, Vida Ventures, Samsara BioCapital and Nextech Invest. Kamb was formerly SVP of Research at Amgen. The company's board of director includes Madhu Balachandran, former EVP of Operations at Amgen. The funding was led by Upfront Ventures, and also included funding from Sinai Ventures, Human Ventures, High Alpha and angels Paul Judge, Peggy Alford and Willie Alford. San Diego-based Daasity, a startup working on data analytics for direct-to-consumer retailers, has raised $2.3M in a funding round, the company said this week. The funding was led by Okapi Venture Capital, and also included Serra Ventures, Cove Fund II, 1855 Capital, and Mooring Ventures LLC. According to the company, it has developed a platform that addresses the critical steps of data extraction, transformation, and analysis to give end users access to business data and metrics. The startup--led by CEO and co-founder Dan LeBlanc--says its product is used in particular for the Shopify Plus e-commerce area, with such customers as Kopari, BioClarity, MVMT Watches, Parachute Home, and Rothy's. Los Angeles-based Ordermark, the restaurant software and services developer spawned out of LA's iconic Canter's Deli, has inked a technology and technology integration deal with Uber Eats, Uber's food delivery service, the two said on wednesday. According to the two, the partnership and technology integration will push Uber Eats orders to the Ordermark Dashboard, making it easier for restaurants to use Uber Eats and manage off-premise orders. In addition, the two said that Ordermark restaurant and virtual kitchen clients who sign up for Uber Eats can get their initial set-up fees waived, and receive a discounted rate. Santa Monica-based HMBradley, a new fintech startup focused on digital banking, has raised $3.5M in a funding round, the company announced this morning. The seed funding was led by Accomplice Ventures and Walkabout Ventures, along with Mucker Capital, Index Ventures and others including HVF Labs (Max Levchin's startup studio). According to HMBradley, it is creating a new banking experience which will pay up to 3% APY to savers who automatically save a portion of their monthly deposits on its platform. Carlsbad-based satellite communications provider Viasat has scored a win with EL AL Israel Airlines, and will power high-speed Internet on EL AL's widebody and narrowbody aircraft, according to the two companies. According to the companies, they have added EL AL's Boeing 777 widebody fleet to and existing agreement where Viasat is supplying its satellite communications systems on EL AL's Boeing 787 Dreamliner, Boeing 737-900 and part of Boeing 737-800 aircraft. Financial details on the win were not announced. EL AL said that it expects to have the majority of its fleet covered by high speed Internet by the end of 2020.

Q-CTRL, a quantum computing startup started in Sydney, Australia, says it has set up a new, U.S. headquarters in Los Angeles. According to the company, it is looking to recruit quantum computing technologists as well as software engineers experienced in AI and machine learning here at its new location, where it says it will help serve its based of industrial and academic clients here in the United States. Los Angeles-based ConnectedTravel, a developer of connected vehicle applications and services, says it has teamed up with Universal Music Group, for a new hackathon which will "imagine next-generation music experiences" for connected vehicles. According to ConnectedTravel, it is in a collaboration with Universal Music Group's Capitol Music Group for the upcoming Capitol Royale Hackathon from November 15-17, 2019. The idea behind the hackathon is to create in-vehicle experiences through application programming interfaces (APIs) that are available from such companies as Ford, Toyota, and Subaru.
