18 Oct 2019 --- In the halls of SupplySide West in Las Vegas, Gelita and biodesign company Gencor have signed a letter of intent for developing and commercializing the first ingestible animal-free collagen proteins – to be launched in late 2020. Rather than sourcing proteins from whole plants or animals, Gencor’s process uses microbes which convert plant-based sugars into protein products through fermentation. Gelita’s role in the partnership will be conducting clinical research and commercializing the product as an addition to its existing collagen portfolio of bioactive collagen peptides. The animal-free collagen delivers on a range of market demands which are becoming ever more stringent, such as sustainability, traceability and purity.

18 Oct 2019 --- In nutrition news this week, the European Commission (EC) allowed the use of bovine milk basic whey protein isolate in infant formula, after a 2018 request from Armor Protéines. Industry watchdog OrganicEye petitioned the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to remove carcinogenic nitrites from processed meats. Furthermore, several British health and nutrition groups jointly launched the Academy of Nutrition Sciences – a charitable organization which aims to promote evidence-based nutrition science.

18 Oct 2019 --- Ingredion has received Low FODMAP Certification for two of its dietary fibers, Versafibe 1490 and Novelose 3490, from Monash University. The certification is awarded to products and ingredients that are low in fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols (FODMAP), as well as short-chain carbs that can cause bloating, diarrhea, constipation and stomach pains. The official Monash University Low FODMAP diet badge facilitates manufacturers and consumers alike to identify ingredients and products that help support digestive health while following a low FODMAP diet.

17 Oct 2019 --- Fruit drinks and flavored waters that contain added sugars and/or low-calorie sweeteners dominated sales of drinks intended for children in 2018. The offerings made up 62 percent of the US$2.2 billion of total children’s drink sales. This is according to a new report, Children’s Drink FACTS 2019. The report highlights the confusing nature of the market for parents seeking to make healthful choices for their children. For example, popular juice and water blends do not contain added sweeteners, but equally popular flavored waters do. Yet, both are often marketed as deceptively healthy, with labels carrying images of fruit, for example.

16 Oct 2019 --- Canada’s recent decision to legalize cannabis has opened up a space that is likely to be a growing market. Capitalizing on this, Fluent Beverage Company, a joint venture between brewery AB InBev and cannabis company Tilray, is set to commercialize non-alcoholic CBD-infused beverages throughout the nation. The plan is to have CBD-infused beverages available for sale to adult consumers in Canada as early as December 2019, subject to regulatory timelines implemented by Health Canada and provincial regulators.

16 Oct 2019 --- Archipelago Ventures, the recently formed joint venture (JV) between Arcadia Biosciences and Legacy Ventures Hawaii, is scaling its Hawaiian hemp cultivation footprint. The JV has also introduced a new autoflowering hemp varietal, as well as initiating oil extraction operations on the islands. This will ultimately allow the company to further develop and test highly specialized, resilient and productive proprietary hemp seeds for a variety of different climates. This is critical for ensuring that hemp reliably has THC levels below the federal limit to avoid having to destroy crops.

16 Oct 2019 --- Supplement developer and manufacturer Anlit has added long-life probiotic (LLP) bites to its family-oriented portfolio. The company’s LLP technology stabilizes a range of probiotic strains to preserve live bacteria in ambient conditions, which has been a major industry challenge. Three of these strains have now been incorporated into chewable bites that are touted as being fun and flavorful. The strains have been adapted to new formulations that target gut health, women’s health and immune function.

Targeting this need, Socati Corp. is integrating advanced microencapsulation technology from the food and beverage spaces into applications within the hemp-derived ingredients market. The US producer of tetrahydrocannabinol-free (THC) full spectrum hemp extracts has debuted a line of flavorless water soluble ingredients aimed at enabling manufacturers to incorporate hemp-derived cannabinoids into their products without the need for emulsifiers, surfactants, additional flavoring agents or other “complicated treatments.”

NutritionInsight spoke to a variety of drink companies on the floor at Anuga 2019 in Cologne, Germany. While some beverages were promoting specific nutrients such as protein or vitamins, others were tapping into broader categories, including hangover cures. New ingredients such as hemp and cocoa bean shells also are helping to attract a new audience.

15 Oct 2019 --- Researchers have linked the structure of specific soluble cranberry proanthocyanidins (C-PAC) with a mechanism of action and efficacy for the first time. The study used Fruit d’Or’s Cran Naturelle whole fruit cranberry powder and demonstrated how E. Coli , an extraintestinal pathogenic (ExPEC), agglutinated – or clumped together – in the presence of C-PAC. Researchers may now build on these results to demonstrate how C-PAC may mitigate E. coli activity in the urinary and intestinal tracts.

14 Oct 2019 --- Beet processor Suiker Unie will produce its first 100kg of protein from sugar beet foliage this year with its Green Protein Demo Plant. The process is a unique “pioneering” method that the Dutch company has exclusive rights to. It makes use of the 1-3 percent protein content in green plant leaves and will eventually be used for plant leaves other than sugar beet. The business flags that plant protein sources will be essential to produce enough proteins to feed the growing world population, and expects the first products made with the protein to be on the market by 2022.

Coined the Swiss Food & Nutrition Valley, the project aims to strengthen the existing innovation ecosystem and attract talent, start-ups and investment to the region. Leveraging cutting-edge science and technology, the collaboration will see the advancement of projects ranging from agricultural development to waste management, and the innovation of products for “healthy and sustainable diets.” The initiative will be officially launched next January.

11 Oct 2019 --- Consumers are looking for increasingly personalized levels of care, particularly within the digestive space. This is according to Lisa Ruttledge, COO and Co-Founder of FoodMarble, a start-up producing a portable breath test and app, dubbed FoodMarble Aire, to measure and track digestive health. She speaks to NutritionInsight about the potential for technology in the nutrition industry, as well as the company’s collaboration agreement with biotechnology company Carbiotix. The partners will hold a preliminary study to examine whether breath hydrogen can be used as a non-invasive, real-time measure of changes in microbiome composition.
