A scoping study for the eight-million tonne a year Etango uranium project, in Namibia, has shown that the project would have a mine life of some 14 years. Owner Bannerman Resources on Wednesday reported that the scoping study estimated a life-of-mine production of some 51.5-million pounds of uranium oxide, with average annual production of 3.5-million pounds.

Rare earths miner Lynas on Wednesday said that it was hoping to start the development of its permanent deposit facility (PDF), in Malaysia, by early 2021. The company has welcomed comments from the Malaysian government that the Atomic Energy Licensing Board had approved the proposed site for the PDF for water leach purification (WLP) residue, subject to the completion of relevant studies and final regulatory approvals.

High-flying platinum group metals (PGM) mining company Royal Bafokeng Platinum (RBPlat) is going into the second half of this Covid-hit year well-positioned with stockpile, upper group two (UG2), lower capital and gold-streaming tailwinds. RBPlat CEO Steve Phiri told a half-year results presentation highlighted by sky-rocketed earnings and flowing cash that both the Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine (BRPM) and ramping-up Styldrift operation delivered strong performances and go into the second half with 172 000 t already on surface, made up primarily of Merenksy reef from Styldrift. Mid-tier copper miner Taseko Mines expects to tick a major permitting box for its Florence Copper project, in the US, this week. The company says it has been informed that the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQO) will issue the draft aquifer protection permit (APP) for the Florence commercial production facility on Thursday. The APP is one of two key permits required to advance the project to commercial production.

Democratic Republic of Congo is suspending the value-added tax (VAT) exemption on imports by mining companies in an effort to bolster state revenue, the budget minister said. Jean-Baudouin Mayo told the finance minister to implement the government's decision to suspend the exemption after cabinet agreed the move last week, according to a letter dated July 31 and seen by Reuters on Tuesday,. Congo, Africa's top copper producer, had exempted mining companies from paying VAT on imports since 2016 to help them during a commodity price downturn.

State-owned power utility Eskom and the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) on August 3 issued summonses in the North Gauteng High Court to recover funds from former Eskom executives, board members and members of the Gupta family and their associates, as well as others. "The funds were lost in a concerted effort corruptly to divert financial resources from Eskom, to improperly and illegally benefit the Gupta family and entities controlled by it and their associates during their 2015/16 acquisition of the operations of Optimum Coal Holdings (OCT).

There is an expectation of price recovery in the market, as demand for power grows alongside the loosening of Covid-19 restrictions, and as more producers hold back supply. In Europe, coal burn is likely to remain weak through 2020 but will be offset by an even bigger contraction in supply, drawing down stocks heading into 2021 and explaining the steep contango that we see in the forward curve.

Gold and base metals explorer Sipa Resources has inked a A$12-million farm-in agreement with the exploration arm of major Rio Tinto over its Paterson North copper/gold project, in Western Australia. Under the terms of the farm-in and joint venture (JV) agreement, Rio will commit a minimum exploration spend of A$3-million within a two-and-a-half year period.

Junior Peel Mining has exercised its pre-emptive rights to acquire joint venture (JV) partner CBH Resource’s 50% stake in the Mallee Bull base metals project, in New South Wales, launching its one-for-eight pro-rata non-renounceable entitlement offer. The company in July this year announced plans to raise A$17.1-million through a share placement and entitlement offer, to fund the Mallee Bull buy.

Diversified miner BHP on Monday announced that up to 30 new jobs would be created in Queensland’s Bowen Basin as a result of a new partnership with Novum Energy to recycle mining truck tyres for the first time in Australia. Used earth moving tyres from all seven coal mine sites in Queensland would be supplied to Novum who will convert the tyres into heavy and light oils, carbon black, syngas and steel at a processing plant being built in Nebo in the Isaac region.

Chilean regulators have rejected lithium producer SQM's $25-million environmental compliance plan for the Atacama salt flat, requesting the miner to start again from scratch, a filing showed. Chile's Environmental Superintendent (SMA) approved SQM's compliance plan early in 2019 after a multi-year investigation found the miner had overdrawn lithium-rich brine from the salt flat.

Chile's copper output fell in June for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic landed in the world´s top producer of the red metal, dropping 0.6% to 472 172 t, according to data released on Friday by government statistics agency INE. The South American nation´s manufacturing output, meanwhile, plunged 8.3% in June, the agency said, as the peak of contagions in the South American nation hammered its economy.

Chile's environmental watchdog on Friday announced a "serious" charge against BHP's Escondida copper mine, the world's largest, for water misuse since 2005. The SMA regulator said the mine had caused a sufficiently serious drop in the water table in one sector of the northern Chilean desert where it is situated that it could result in the revocation of its environmental permit, closure or a fine.
