TSX-listed Ivanhoe Mines has completed the second major strategic equity investment of C$612-million in the company by Citic Metal Africa Investments, a subsidiary of Chinese resource company Citic Metal. Announced by Ivanhoe co-chairpersons Robert Friedland and Yufeng (Miles) Sun on Friday, the investment forms an integral part of Ivanhoe and Citic Metal’s long-term strategic cooperation and brings Citic’s investment in Ivanhoe to more than $1-billion in less than one year.

Clean hydrogen, which South Africa is ideally placed to produce because of its superior sunshine and platinum abndance, is earmarked to replace oil in a world anxious to mitigate climate change, the planet’s most pressing current problem. New liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC) technology has made it possible for hydrogen to be handled in the same way as oil is, using conventional oil tankers and road tankers for transport and traditional underground tanks for starage, in ambient conditions, with platinum group metals (PGMs) potentially prominant throughout.

A total of 54 out of State-run miner Coal India Limited’s (CIL’s) 120 coal mining projects are delayed, the company said in its latest financial statement. CIL reported that the major reasons for the delays in completion of the 54 projects were the time taken in securing mandatory environment and forest clearances, possession of land complexities and issues relating to resettlement and rehabilitation of project-affected people.

South African business representatives have been asked to invest more into the Copperbelt Province of Zambia, with a greater focus on job creation, value addition and diversification. Zambian Copperbelt province Minister Japhen Mwakalombe this week remarked during a South Africa-Zambia Business Seminar, held alongside an Outward Trade and Investment mission to Zambia, led by the South African Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC), that Zambia was ready for South African investment.

Exploration company SolGold, which is advancing the Cascabel project in Ecuador, is expanding its drilling fleet to expedite its prefeasibility study (PFS) of the Alpala deposit by the end of the first quarter next year. The Brisbane, Australia-based company will have a total of 15 drill rigs active on Cascabel by next month to expedite the data collection ahead of the Alpala PFS deadline, the Toronto- and London-listed company said on Friday.

The Red Chris mine, near Dease Lake, north-west British Columbia, is moving to the next chapter with Australian gold miner Newcrest now the majority owner and operator of the copper/gold mine. Imperial announced on Friday that it had closed the sale of a 70% interest in Red Chris to Newcrest for a final purchase price of $804-million, which was subject to debt and working capital adjustments.

The Malaysian government has renewed the operating license of rare earths miner Lynas for an initial six month period, imposing a number of conditions on the company, including the relocation of cracking and leaching activities offshore. Lynas’ growth plans out to 2025 would see the company move its cracking and leaching operations to Western Australia.

Global mined zinc production will continue to ramp up as strong zinc prices prompt miners to bring idled capacity back on line and invest in new projects, according to analysis and consultancy company Fitch Solutions. While some capacity taken off line over 2015 to 2016 is the result of permanent mine closures, the return of some stalled capacity and new projects in key countries will drive growth over the coming quarters.

South African mineral research organisation Mintek has started metallurgical testwork on stockpile material from the Haib copper project in Namibia for Canadian rights holder and mining company Deep South Resources. Mintek has been provided with about 1.8 t of ore sample from a large stockpile that was extracted during a previous sampling campaign. The sample contains chalcopyrite as the main copper mineral. The aim of the programme is to test the amenability of the ore to microbially-assisted heap leaching. The testwork will produce data for an eventual commercial pilot heap leach campaign.

The biggest challenge that the copper market is facing is the Chinese restriction on copper scrap, international commodities consultancy Core Consultants tells Mining Weekly. “There is a reclassification of Category 6 copper scrap to a ‘restricted import good’ under the Chinese import restrictions. This means there will be a quota system . . . in the third quarter of 2019,” says Core Consultants MD Lara Smith.

Despite cobalt’s continued downward trend, with its being reduced in cathodes in energy storage, the general sentiment is that the demand for the commodity will exceed supply, says commodities expert Core Consultants. “However, there is currently an oversupply in the hydroxide market, which leads to eroded premiums that the refiners of battery chemicals were once paying,” Core Consultants MD Lara Smith tells Mining Weekly.

Axis House supplies a large quantity of flotation collectors, which are used to separate minerals from waste rock, to Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) – key regions with large base metal reserves.

Despite new and innovative mining technologies continuing to enter the mining sector, tried-and-trusted technologies may still have an important role to play, says working face consumables manufacturer Terramin CEO Martin van Schoor. New mining technologies can provide many benefits, such as reducing labour and lowering employee numbers in the work space, thereby limiting exposure to injury, and safety risks, as well as increasing productivity. However, many of these new technologies may require costly maintenance by highly skilled technicians and operators, who might also be in short supply.
