22 Aug 2019 --- Del Monte Pacific Limited (DMPL) has announced its plans to move to an asset-light strategy and divest production facilities of US subsidiary Del Monte Foods. Facilities to be closed are located at Sleepy Eye, Minnesota; Cambria, Wisconsin; and Mendota, Illinois. Production will cease at these facilities at the end of the current pack season. The company will also be selling manufacturing assets at its Crystal City, Texas facility and intends to transfer production at this site to outside locations later this year. Financial terms and buyers of the facilities have not been disclosed.

22 Aug 2019 --- Nature-based ingredient supplier CP Kelco is expanding its gellan gum production capabilities in the US. In response to the continued global demand for the product, CP Kelco is making a significant investment to increase capacity at its Okmulgee, Oklahoma, biogums production facility that closely follows a similar investment in China. As one of the company’s fermentation-derived products, Kelcogel gellan gum provides stabilization, suspension and texture for a variety of food and beverages.

22 Aug 2019 --- Researchers at the John Innes Centre have come one step closer to genetically engineering rice that is resistant to a globally devastating fungus. The discovery, published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry , provides new insights into how rice’s immune receptors recognize and bind to fungal proteins. With a grip on how the grain fights illness, researchers hope to arm a variety of rice with the receptors it needs to resist rice blast disease. The fungus causes losses of up to a third of the global rice harvest – enough to feed 60 million people each year, reports the institute.

21 Aug 2019 --- Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO, has revealed how a “secret recipe” to encourage Black Soldier Flies to mate can help tackle food waste. Working with Canberra-based start-up Goterra, CSIRO’s farming experts tested lighting, temperature, moisture, surface texture and diet in a bid to find the perfect combination of conditions that will encourage flies to mate. By boosting egg-laying, Goterra is aiming to increase the number of flies that will consume food waste and turn it into compost.

21 Aug 2019 --- Ajinomoto Group has signed a share purchase agreement to acquire a 50.1 percent equity stake in US-based French sauces and stocks producer More Than Gourmet Holdings (MTG). The agreement is facilitated in a strategic partnership through Ajinomoto Co.’s consolidated subsidiary Ajinomoto Health & Nutrition North America (AHN). The move is a bid to expand Ajinomoto’s Integrated Food Solutions business in North America.

21 Aug 2019 --- Producer and innovator of stevia sweeteners PureCircle is launching an ice cream with no added sugar, set to debut at the end of the month in Chicago, US. The “gourmet” ice cream will initially be distributed around the city via PureCircle-branded ice cream trucks. The company also plans to provide the ice cream in other foodservice outlets, as well as to sell stevia-based ingredient blends to other ice cream producers. The frozen treats are sweetened with the company’s new generation of stevia, which it highlights as working well in dessert applications such as ice cream, as well as in a wide range of beverage and food products. This taps into the reduced-sugar trend, as well as allowing diabetics to enjoy sweets, with Pure.

20 Aug 2019 --- US multinational retail corporation Walmart and media platform BuzzFeed’s “Tasty” division have partnered to offer consumers “shoppable recipes.” The retailer invites shoppers to add the entire ingredient list from items on a menu of 4,000 Tasty cooking videos directly to their Walmart Online Grocery carts with one click. From there, they can place their order for pickup or have the groceries delivered to their homes from stores across the US.

20 Aug 2019 --- The UK government has launched a call for consumers, businesses, academics and NGOs to share ideas that will be used to create a new National Food Strategy (NFS). These views will inform the first major UK food system review in almost 75 years and will ensure that the food industry is “fit for the future.” Other goals include supporting growth, enhancing the environment and being resilient to climate change challenges. 20 Aug 2019 --- Chlorinated chicken, as part of a post-Brexit free trade deal with the US, is “the thin end of the wedge” that could impact public health and threaten thousands of jobs in the UK food processing industry. This is according to Unite, Britain and Ireland’s largest union. Unite called on the government last week to give a clear statement that it will not “sellout” the estimated 450,000 workers directly employed by the UK food industry in any free trade deal with US President Trump.

20 Aug 2019 --- Just in time for the back-to-school season, Solely, Inc. has launched its line of six certified-organic, single and two-ingredient fruit jerkies across Whole Foods Market Stores in the US. The launch comes at a time of growth in plant-based snacking. Solely Inc. is a subsidiary of Mexico City-based Fruitex, an innovative clean food company that is rethinking how food is developed, grown, sourced, processed and sold. The company also works with farmers to reduce food waste by sourcing imperfect fruit for its products.

20 Aug 2019 --- The Hershey Company has announced its minority investments in emerging snacking businesses Fulfil Nutrition and Blue Stripes Cacao Shop. The deals are facilitated through C7 Ventures, Hershey’s venture model, responsible for the deployment of small capital investments in “disruptive or emerging” platforms focused on “new occasions, new technologies and new go-to-market opportunities.” Hershey is not disclosing the full investment value in either company, but the move is part of its wider strategy to expand into the wellness and snacking categories.

19 Aug 2019 --- Agriculture-biotechnology company Arbiom sees potential for wood to be converted into protein for human consumption. The US-based company specializes in using a fermentation technique to turn wood into SylPro, a yeast single-cell protein that can be used as a replacement for plant protein concentrates or for fishmeal. The commercialization of wood-derived protein for humans would provide manufacturers with another plant-based protein option at a time when consumers are increasingly turning towards more sustainable options.
