In Kentucky, coal still generates the vast majority of electricity: 75 percent in 2018, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. That dominance is waning, however. Last year, renewable-powered electricity in the U.S. surpassed coal-fired power, and two of the largest coal plants . Meanwhile, in a striking bit of energy transition symbolism, the state’s Coal Mining Museum, located in Benham, historically a coal town, made the switch to solar as a cost-cutting measure back in 2017. “It is a little ironic,” museum spokesperson Brandon Robinson at the time. “Of course, coal is still king around here.”The museum’s decision is unlikely to be the predominant trend in Kentucky. Though coal is steadily losing its grip on the energy

The nation's top rooftop solar installer finished the year with a burst of home solar-plus-storage deals. Sunrun installed a record 117 megawatts of solar in Q4, within its most recent guidance for the quarter and up 9 percent from Q3. The company achieved double digit annual growth in installations, though it grew slower than originally expected. Sunrun also reported rapid growth in its battery business, with the company pitching customers on resilient power in the face of California's wildfires and utility power shutoffs. More than half of Q4 solar sales in the Bay Area included battery storage, CEO Lynn Jurich said in an interview Thursday. Overall in California, 35 percent of Sunrun's sales included energy storage. The company reported

When looking at U.S. renewable energy markets, Texas and California are the leaders in wind and solar, respectively. There are more than 27 gigawatts of wind in Texas, , and 25 gigawatts of solar in California,. But as we’ve seen wind and solar grow in many markets, we’ve also seen grid integration challenges arise, including record-high penetration levels of individual technologies. Stories of by the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) are well known throughout the industry. When 26 gigawatts of solar are peaking at 4 p.m. on the California grid, project owners’ returns can plummet due to low power prices and potential curtailment. Texas faces its own set of issues. Anyone who has ever stepped foot in Houston in the middle of Jul.

When we started Sol Systems around a dinner table in 2008, PV modules cost $3/watt — and even that was a recent breakthrough. Those same modules now cost 30-40 cents/watt, and they are significantly more efficient. As we noted , solar energy technology continues its path to global dominance. have fallen by 89 percent in the last decade, even as modules and balance-of-system technologies increase in efficiency. Solar is now the source of electricity in two-thirds of the world. Solar pricing will further fall in the next five years as multi-busbar modules increase harvest and reliability, wafers get both thinner and larger and drive efficiency improvements, raw silicon declines in value, silver use falls by 40 percent, and manufacturing facil.

NextEra Energy, North America’s leading wind and solar generator, is combing through its base of existing solar facilities with an eye to retroactively adding batteries, as it takes a more "aggressive" view on the falling cost of energy storage. "We increasingly see storage as an important standalone business in its own right," CEO Jim Robo said Friday on an earnings call.

For almost every year in the historical record, utilities paid no attention to battery storage. Because of this, the past offers little insight into how quickly utilities will adopt the technology, which helps integrate renewables onto the grid, deliver peak capacity without carbon emissions, instantly adjust the frequency of the system and more. As costs have fallen and early adopters liked what they saw from initial trials, though, the cycle from pilot to evaluation to widespread adoption is speeding up.

Cumulative emissions in the past five decades reached 1.125 trillion tonnes last year. This equates to above 1-degree temperature increase from pre-industrial levels, and it's had an impact on the environment — with bushfires in Australia, continued Arctic ice melting, and increasingly extreme weather events worldwide. What would it take to see faster change? Wood Mackenzie’s latest seeks to answer that question. We still maintain our that the globe is on a 3-degree trajectory and that the long-term energy mix remain dominated by hydrocarbons. However, our two new scenarios outline two possible pathways for lower emissions globally. The Accelerated Energy Transition (AET) reflects the potential for heightened preferences across society to m.

Investment firm Capital Dynamics added another of the largest U.S. solar projects underway to its growing portfolio, announcing Wednesday the purchase of the 400-megawatt Eland project in Kern County, California from 8minute Solar Energy. The ground-breaking Eland project is due to reach full commercial operation in 2023 some 70 miles outside of Los Angeles, and will feature a 300 megawatt/1,200 megawatt-hour energy storage facility, making it one of the country's largest solar-plus-storage projects announced to date. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Arizona Public Service, the largest utility in the sunny southwestern state, committed itself Wednesday to 100 percent carbon-free power by 2050. The promise includes interim targets of 65 percent clean electricity by 2030, with 45 percent coming from renewables, and removing coal from its portfolio by 2031. With this decision, APS joins a growing list of major electric utilities committing to decarbonize their production.

We’re now in the 2020s. Many of the tropes from films and literature about this era may not have come true, but there’s a lot happening around us that does feel futuristic. In this week's episode of The Interchange , we are offering up proof that we are living in the energy future — right now. Shayle and Stephen are each going to pick a use of technology that once seemed futuristic, but is now a reality. We’re also going to choose a technology that we thought would arrive but now, but is still seemingly off into the future. What’s your pick? Let us know on Twitter. Follow , & and send comments about the show. This podcast is brought to you by Fronius. Now, Fronius gives you more control over your solar energy than ever before with its versa.

InBev, brewer of Budweiser and a host of other beers, has signed a 130-megawatt solar power purchase agreement, which it calls the largest "pan-European corporate solar" PPA so far. The deal, with German renewables developer BayWa r.e., will supply enough electricity for 14 breweries in Western Europe. BayWa will finance and develop two new solar projects in Spain totaling 200 megawatts, with InBev's virtual PPA acting as the tentpole. Completion of the projects — one of them to be called the Budweiser Solar Farm — is expected by March 2022.

Developer Solarcentury has secured €54.8 million ($61.1 million) of finance for 500 megawatts of solar in Spain — with a little help from the U.K. government. The backing by U.K. Export Finance (UKEF), the national credit agency, is effectively a guarantee on the loans and enabled London-based Solarcentury to borrow more than they could have on the open market.

Which research-focused stories got the most traffic last year? Below, a few pieces from 2019 that are worth catching up on. (August 2019). In August, Wood Mackenzie released four charts summarizing the global energy transition. The figures include carbon emissions scenarios through 2040, plus annual solar, storage and wind forecasts through 2025. It’s the story of the century: Little evidence that the energy transition will move fast enough to stop the most catastrophic impacts of climate change, despite dramatic increases in wind, solar energy, and energy storage deployment around the world. (September 2019). Another popular research spotlight from 2019 was grid edge research director Ben Kellison’s analysis of Amazon’s massive electric vehi.
