Ireland-based Specialist Nutrition has secured a five-year deal worth €135 million to supply by-products from a US ethanol plant as sustainable feed to farmers in New York. Part of the Arvum Group, Specialist Nutrition converts co-products produced in the distilling, brewing and biofuel industries into sustainable animal feed. The deal with US-based Attis Industries will see the company establish a base in the US, in Syracuse, New York, to market and distribute 500,000 tonnes of feed annually into the state’s dairy farming sector from a corn ethanol plant in Fulton. Through the agreement, Attis will be able to market to wet cake and syrup co-product streams into speciality feed applications, which is the company’s first step towards transfo.

US clean fuel association Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) has thanked Congressional leaders for renewing and extending certain biofuel tax provisions in an agreement reached earlier this week. The amendment would retroactively reinstate the second-generation biofuel producer credit, the special allowance for second-generation biofuel plant property and the alternative fuel refuelling property credit for 2018 and 2019, extending them through 2020. In addition, the biodiesel tax credit was reinstated for 2018 and 2019 and extended through 2022. “This is welcome news for the entire renewable fuels industry, and we thank Senator Grassley, Speaker Pelosi and other congressional leadership who made this important compromise possible,” commented.

Fuel company Broco Oil has been contracted to provide bio-based heating oil for use in the US city of Boston’s city-owned buildings, including fire stations, police stations and other municipal facilities. The heating oil is a B20 Bioheat® fuel blend, containing 20% biodiesel, which significantly reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared with petroleum-based diesel fuel and heating oil. Under a partnership announced in May 2019, Broco Oil will purchase its biodiesel from Renewable Energy Group (REG).

US airline Delta has signed a long-term offtake agreement with renewable fuel producer Gevo for the purchase of 10 million gallons per year of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). SAF provides significant environmental benefits, as the lifecycle carbon footprint of the fuel can be up to 75% lower than conventional jet fuel. The agreement complements the airline’s recent $2 million (€1.79 million) investment in Northwest Advanced Bio-fuels for a feasibility study of a facility to produce SAF and other biofuel products in the US state of Washington. Delta’s investment in sustainable fuel is just one element of its commitment to carbon neutral growth and the reduction of emissions by 50% by 2050. “Long-term investments such as our agreement with G.

Airplane manufacturer Bombardier has announced that California, US-based private jet charterer Latitude 33 Aviation has taken delivery of the first customer aircraft to be powered by sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Latitude 33 Aviation will manage and charter the Challenger 350 business jet in Seattle on behalf of the aircraft owner. "We are very pleased that the customer and Latitude 33 Aviation joined us in demonstrating that SAF can become a mainstream, drop-in alternative to traditional jet fuel for general aviation aircraft," said Peter Likoray, senior vice-president, worldwide sales and marketing at Bombardier Business Aircraft.

Researchers at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) have discovered a novel oxygenate molecule that can be produced from biomass to be used as a blend for diesel fuel. The NREL team is working with scientists from Yale University, Argonne National Laboratory and Oak Ridge National Laboratory as part of the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Co-Optimisation of Fuels and Engines (Co-Optima) initiative. The research of the initiative focuses on improving fuel economy and vehicle performance while reducing emissions. "If you look at biomass, 30% of it is oxygen," explained Derek Vardon, a senior research engineer at NREL.

Shipping and logistics provider CMA CGM Group has partnered with Shell for the supply of tens of thousands of tonnes of marine biofuel to its fleet. The volume of fuel will allow CMA CGM’s vessels to travel almost one million kilometres, equivalent to over 80 round-trips between Rotterdam in the Netherlands and the US city of New York. In 2019, CMA CGM became the world’s first shipowner to successfully test the use of a marine biofuels onboard its containerships White Shark and Alexander Von Humboldt. The fuel to be supplied under the new partnership with Shell is comprised of 80% low sulphur fuel oil and 20% biofuel, sourced from used cooking oil.

In an effort to reduce carbon emissions, Swedish waste power plant Renova has upgraded its eight start-up and support burners to operate on biofuel. By switching to biofuel from fossil oil, emissions will be reduced by around 960 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. The start-up and support burners head Renova’s four waste heat boilers after annual auditing, or when otherwise needed, for example if the waste is very wet.

Researchers at Aarhus University in Denmark have discovered an unusual enzyme in microalgae that can be used to convert waste oils and fat into drop-in biofuels. Supported by a grant of DKK 3 million (€0.4 million) from the Novo Nordisk Foundation, the research project at Aarhus University’s Department of Engineering aims to develop a system that converts organic waste into sustainable biofuels via natural processes. The special light-dependent enzyme, which was first discovered around two years ago, exists in microalgae.

Biomass process systems provider Caribou Biofuels has teamed up with the Research Foundation for SUNY (the State University of New York) to develop and commercialise a rotary gasifier that converts combustible waste into biofuel, with a soil supplement as a by-product. The technology was invented at SUNY Cobleskill by Professor David Waage, with initial research funded by a joint Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Defense (DOD) programme. This year, SUNY Cobleskill received a grant worth $1.6 million (€1.43 million) from the two government agencies to build and demonstrate a fully automated, portable rotary gasifier waste-to-energy system at a military base in the US. The gasifier is able to produce both gaseous and liq.
