NEW DELHI — The Indian Army has offered to the Pakistan military to take possession of bodies of its personnel who were killed when it foiled an attack by Pakistan's Border Action Team (BAT) in Keran sector of Jammu and Kashmir, official sources said Sunday.The sources said here that the Pakistan Army has been asked to approach the Indian Army by raising white flags and take possession of bodies which are lying on the Indian side of the LoC.The Army had foiled an attack by BAT on a forward post along the Line of Control (LoC) in Keran sector, killing five to seven intruders.

SRINAGAR — The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar has suspended its classes till further orders in view of the uncertain situation in Kashmir. "This is for the information of all the students of the institute that the class work for all courses stands suspended till further orders," an order issued by the Registrar of NIT on Friday read. "The above notice stands issued in accordance with the instructions received from the District Administration, Srinagar," it added. However, district magistrate Srinagar Shahid Iqbal Choudhary said no instructions were given to shut the institute. SRINAGAR — More than 50-hour long gunfight between militants and government forces ended in Shopian district of south Kashmir on Saturday, claiming two militants, a soldier and non-local labourer. The encounter ensued on the intervening night of August 1 and 2 at Ittoo Mohalla Pandushan village and ended on Saturday afternoon with the killing of a militant Manzoor Ahmad Bhat of Wachi Zainapora. Yesterday a militant identified as Zeenat-ul-Islam Naikoo of Memmander Shopian, a soldier Sepoy Rambir and the non-local Labourer Mohammad Mozim (25) son of Mohammad Akthar Mansore, a resident of village Chunni, Chhatapur of Supaul district in Bihar, were killed.

SRINAGAR — Governor Satya Pal Malik on Saturday said fears regarding state’s special status and trifurcation talk were misplaced and nothing of sort was imminently happening as per his opinion. "As we keep on discussing with leadership in New Delhi, nothing has come to fore that something is imminently happening," Malik said in an interview here. "Regarding talks about the doing away of the two Articles (35A and 370) or trifurcation of the state (statehood for Jammu and declaring Kashmir and Ladakh union territories), all these things would come from Parliament.

SRINAGAR — National Conference leader Omar Abdullah on Saturday said Governor S P Malik has assured his party that no moves are planned on repealing articles 370 and 35A of the Constitution, or the state's trifurcation. However, the former J&K chief minister said he wants an assurance on these issues from the Centre in Parliament on Monday as "the Governor is not the final word on Jammu and Kashmir". Abdullah and some of his party colleagues met the Governor on Saturday on these issues.

SRINAGAR — Army has claimed to have foiled an attack by Pakistan's Border Action Team (BAT) on a forward post along the Line of Control (LoC) in Keran sector of north Kashmir, killing at least “five to seven” intruders. The BAT generally comprises special forces personnel of the Pakistani Army and militants. "A BAT attempt was made on one of the forward posts in Keran sector (in Kupwara district) and foiled by alert troops resulting in neutralising of five to seven Pak regulars/terrorists," defence spokesman Col Rajesh Kalia said. He said Pakistan has made a number of attempts in the last 36 hours to disturb peace in the Valley and to target Amarnath Yatra. SRINAGAR — People on Saturday continued to queue up outside petrol pumps and stock up essentials, brushing off government’s clarification and request not to interpret Friday’s order, asking Amarnath yatris and tourists to leave Kashmir, in any manner that there is any threat to the residents of Jammu and Kashmir. SRINAGAR — Even as the authorities claim to provide better medical care to the patients at valley hospitals, the alleged misbehavior of officials at GB Pant hospital here with the attendants has put a question mark over the claims. Shah Jehangir, an attendant whose baby is admitted at the hospital had been asked to conduct ultrasonography of the minor patient by the doctors. However, Jehangir said that soon after he reached the ultrasonography section at the hospital, he asked the officials to conduct the test as advised by the doctor. NEW DELHI — State-owned Punjab National Bank (PNB) on Saturday said the RBI has imposed a penalty of Rs 50 lakh on it for delay in reporting of fraud in the account of Kingfisher Airlines. "RBI observed from the fraud monitoring report-1 submitted by Punjab National Bank on July, 10 2018 that the bank had delayed the reporting of fraud in the account of Kingfisher Airlines Limited," PNB said in a regulatory filing. In exercise of the powers conferred under various sections of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949, a penalty of Rs 50 lakh was imposed by the RBI on the bank, it added. In a separate filing, Bank of Baroda said the RBI has imposed a fine of Rs 50 lakh on it for delay in reporting fraud in an account.

MUMBAI — The Reserve Bank on Friday said it has imposed a collective penalty of ₹11 crore on seven public sector banks for violating norms on current account opening. Allahabad Bank and Bank of Maharashtra have been imposed a fine of ₹2 crore each, Bank of Baroda, Bank of India, Indian Overseas Bank and United Bank of India have been slapped with fines of ₹1.5 crore each, while Oriental Bank of Commerce has been imposed with a penalty of ₹1 crore. "The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has, by an order dated July 31, 2019, imposed monetary penalty on seven banks for non-compliance with certain provisions of directions issued by RBI on 'Code of Conduct for Opening and Operating Current Accounts'," RBI said in a release. NEW DELHI — Ghost of Maqbool Butt, and Afzal Guru, the two Kashmiris who were hanged in Tihar Jail, haunts Tihar jail inmates, according to a report published by India Today. Maqbool, the founder of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), was hanged in 1984, while as Afzal Guru, was hanged in 2013. SRINAGAR — Two militants and an army soldier besides a non-local labourer were killed in a gunfight which ensued on the intervening night of August 1 and 2 at Ittoo Mohalla Pandushan village of South Kashmir’s Shopian. On Saturday, one more militant was killed and his body was retrieved by the joint team of forces to conclude the "operation",reported news agency GNS. Yesterday a militant identified as Zeenat-ul-Islam Naikoo of Memmander Shopian, a soldier and the non-local Labourer namely Mujeeb of Bihar were killed. Two weapons including one AK 47 and one SLR rifle were also recovered by the forces from the slain duo militants. A police officer said that investigations are underway to ascertain the circumstances under which Mujeeb was kill.

NEW DELHI —The Congress on Friday urged the government not to take any decision that would precipitate a crisis in Jammu and Kashmir and asked it to ensure the constitutional guarantees given to the state are maintained. The appeal to the government came after a Congress policy planning group on Jammu and Kashmir met under the chairmanship of former prime minister Manmohan Singh. "There was deep concern expressed at the continuous reports emanating from both the Union Home Ministry and the State Government which were creating an atmosphere of panic and apprehension about the intentions of the government," an official statement said.
