Visit Sunshine Coast (VSC) has secured the services of former Tourism Australia New Zealand manager, Jenny Aitken, to represent the Sunshine Coast region. Ms Aitken successfully drove major increases in leisure and business events travel to Australia in her 12 years at the helm of Tourism Australia in New Zealand. Interim-CEO of Visit Sunshine Coast, Craig Davidson, said the timing of Ms Aitken’s appointment will provide a major boost in confidence for the Sunshine Coast region’s tourism operators.

Last Friday work officially commenced on a 55-storey tower in Parramatta – a building that will eventually house Western Sydney’s first QT Hotel. The historic Parramatta riverside precinct will offer luxury residences alongside the hotel, which will boast 250 rooms over 18 storeys, and multiple meeting and event spaces including a grand ballroom. The project broke ground after a lengthy development approval process which began in 2016.

According to bookings tracked by industry analysts STR, occupancy rates until September are running below 20 per cent in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Darwin. STR does not expect a return to pre-COVID demand levels in most markets until 2023. Despite the long road to recovery, STR does expect demand to increase by about 60 to 80 per cent of 2019 levels over the next six to 12 months.

Former chief operating officer of Byron Bay’s Bluesfest, Steve Romer, has been appointed general manager of The Events Centre (TEC) Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast. Prior to Bluesfest, Romer was chief executive of the Venue Management Association Asia Pacific (VMA), the peak industry association representing performing arts centres, convention centres, entertainment arenas and sports stadiums.

Queensland treasurer, the Hon. Cameron Dick has formally announced that the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre (BCEC) will be reopening in August 2020 following the approval by Queensland Health of its Site Specific COVID Safe Plan. The treasurer stated that the reopening of BCEC is a significant milestone for Queensland. “As we unite and recover from the pandemic, it’s cause for celebration that we can welcome staff and visitors back to this outstanding venue,” he said.

Hundreds of Australia’s brightest environmental minds will gather in Mandurah next year for a national conference, after organisers postponed the 2020 event due to COVID-19. The Australian Association of Environmental Education (AAEE) national biennial conference will take place over three days in September 2021, to allow for interstate travellers to attend. Around 300 delegates are expected to stay in Mandurah during the event, and mayor Rhys Williams said that the conference will allow for the city’s environmental assets to be showcased.

Arna Wahl has been appointed as the new Professional Conference Organisation Association (PCOA) councillor for New Zealand. Arna is the co-founder and director of Cosmopolitan, a PCO which manages mid-to-large sized conferences throughout New Zealand. An industry veteran with more than 20 years’ experience, Arna started her career as a chef in international hotels before moving into event management. PCOA President Barry Neame said Arna will strengthen the relationship between the PCOA and Conventions and Incentives New Zealand (CINZ).

The first details of the rescheduled IBTM Asia Pacific – which will take place between April 13 and 14 2021 at Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre in Singapore – have been released. The event will be themed ‘inventing the future’ and involve an education program and networking opportunities for attendees. IBTM Asia Pacific event manager, Michael Jones, said: “We are working on a range of exciting initiatives in the run up to the event, including a regionally focused future trends report.”

This year’s Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix, scheduled to take place in September, has been cancelled due to nationwide Covid-19 restrictions. In a statement released last Friday (12 June), event promoter Singapore GP (SGP) and Formula 1 said the decision to cancel the event was made due to ongoing restrictions on construction and business activities in the Lion City. Such measures have inhibited construction of the street circuit, which usually begin in May.
