Five years on from its opening, Novotel Geelong has revealed a locally-inspired upgrade. The colour, furnishings and décor were all inspired by the city’s surroundings, with ocean and art strongly reflected in each. All 109 guest rooms in the four-star hotel have been refurbished with a new paint scheme, carpet, curtains, chaise lounges, feature walls, smart TVs and furnishings. The bathrooms have also been updated with a fresh and modern look.

Eleven months on from its launch, AccorBot, Accor Australia’s integrated Facebook chatbot, has taken out the award for ‘Best Use of a Chatbot in Social Media’ at the 2019 Social Media Marketing Awards. AccorBot was designed to help the group’s 1.8 million Facebook fans across the Pacific with everything from hotel reservations, customer service queries, city guide information and more. The awards night was held at Sydney’s Cockle Bay Wharf on August 15, and was attended by 200 social media marketers.

In an effort to expand its position as the Gateway to North America, the Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board has expanded its efforts in the Asia Pacific region. Craig Gibbons has been appointed regional director of Oceania and Southeast Asia, and in addition to helming the tourism efforts in Australia and New Zealand, will oversee Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Gibbons will develop and support air service for Los Angeles International Airport, design a training program and attend trade shows.

The Exhibition and Event Association of Australasia (EEAA) is calling for nominations to recognise the industry’s unsung heroes and emerging leaders. Organisers, associations, venues and suppliers in the EEAA community are all eligible to enter the 2019 Awards for Excellence. There are five categories in the awards: the Richard Geddes Young Achiever Award, the Unsung Hero Award, the Best Show Team, the Best Venue Team and the Best Supplier Show Team. Entries will be judged by 30 independent experts.

The historic FCC Mansion, one of Siem Reap’s most treasured colonial sites, has re-opened its doors as FCC Angkor, managed by Avani Hotels & Resorts. Located across from the Royal Independence Gardens and Royal Residence, the hotel boasts 80 rooms, a restaurant with high ceilings and natural light and a colonial-era bar adorned with copper, wood, and sandstone. Local weaving villages were also employed to produce bed runners and chair cushions. The hotel is located around 15 minutes from Angkor Wat.

Australia’s 38 best events have been named as finalists for the Australian Event Awards. A host of achievements, companies and individuals also make up the nominations. Some of the finalists in the business events space include Perth Festival, Santos Tour Down Under 2018, Vivid Sydney 2018 and Invictus Games 2018. Winners of the Australian Event Awards will be announced at Perth’s Optus Stadium on September 18, 2019.

Mt Mulligan Lodge is the newest member of Luxury Lodges Australia (LLoA), a collection of uniquely Australian luxe lodges and camps. The lodge opened in April this year, and is situated on a 280 sqm working cattle station. Accessible via helicopter or a four-wheel drive adventure from Cairns, Mt Mulligan Lodge can accommodate 16 guests. It is sited at the base of an escarpment, among eucalyptus woodlands, with views of Mount Mulligan.

IHG has announced that its entire hotel estate of almost 843,000 guest rooms will switch to bulk-size bathroom amenities by 2021. The initiative is part of the hotel giant’s efforts to reduce plastic waste, and will make it the first global hotel company to commit all brands to removing bathroom miniatures. Its other efforts in the sustainability realm include the removal of plastic straws from hotels and joining the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Circular Economy 100 network.

Following an incident in September 2018 which forced its closing, Adina Apartment Hotel Brisbane will re-open on November 25 this year. The hotel is nestled in the heritage-listed former Queensland Government Savings Bank building, and boasts 220 rooms and suites. It is also situated near the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre (BCEC), the Queensland Performing Arts Centre and the $3 billion Queen’s Wharf re-development.

Following a wages scandal which saw him underpay staff almost $8 million, celebrity chef George Calombaris has been dumped from Tourism WA’s advertising campaigns. Calombaris led a campaign promoting WA running alongside a WA-themed MasterChef week which aired earlier this season. The ads, which have been pulled across TV and digital mediums, were set to run until September. On the furore, state tourism minister Paul Papalia commented: “People should pay their employees what they’re owed… [it’s] really disappointing.”

Tourism figures released this week have shown that 12 million domestic visitors converged on the Gold Coast last year. In the 12 months to March 2019, domestic overnight visitation grew by 17 per cent to a record four million. The number of Brisbane overnight visitors spiked by 37.7 per cent to a record 1.4 million, while Sydney and Melbourne saw visitation increase by 5.9 per cent and 1.7 per cent respectively, to draw a collective 2.1 million overnight interstate tourists.

Lord mayor Adrian Schrinner has announced Brisbane will receive an economic boost of over $112 million through new business events set to take place in the city over the coming years. Mr Schrinner said that 91 business events have been secured by Brisbane Marketing and partners, which is a jump of 20 per cent compared with a year ago. The events will see the city welcome 47,600 industry experts, thought leaders and delegates over a combined 185,200 days.
