With implementation of conservative treatment methods like physiotherapy and individually tailored, adjusted exercises, quality of osteoarthritis care can improve and patients can delay the need for an artificial hip or knee joint. This has been demonstrated by a clinical study from Norway that was recently presented at the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR 2020) Online Annual Congress.
AThe cells, dubbed "PRIME cells," accumulate in the blood during the week prior to disease flare-ups, Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator Robert Darnell's team reports July 15, 2020, in the New England Journal of Medicine. The findings could lead to better prediction of when severe pain and swelling, called "flares" will occur, as well as provide new avenues for treatment.
Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) often suffer from what is referred to as interstitial lung disease (ILD). For years, standard medication with Methotrexate (MTX) has been suspected of either increasing the risk of, or worsening, this aspect of rheumatoid arthritis. This suspicion is now refuted by two current studies. The results have been presented at the annual conference of the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR 2020).
Disease-related, profound fatigue impairs the quality of life of many people with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases. A Belgian study has now concluded that early intensive treatment combining methotrexate with a bridging scheme of prednisone can reduce the onerous fatigue—this also applies to patients at low risk of a severe course. The European League against Rheumatism (EULAR) therefore recommends, that even in so-called low-risk patients, early consideration should be given to whether intensive treatment should be initiated.
The European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) has published new provisional recommendations in response to the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic— SARS-CoV-2 is a new virus and COVID-19 a new disease. People with rheumatic musculoskeletal diseases (RMD) may have specific concerns at this time due to their disease or its treatment. Since generic COVID-19 guidance does not focus on RMD, EULAR considered it essential to fill this gap. The new provisional recommendations are designed to supplement country-level government guidelines, and support rheumatologists and healthcare professionals who care for people with RMD, physicians involved in treating COVID-19, as well as RMDpatients and their families. Based on existing guidance documents and expe.
